Hi guys,

I'm at the point of tears here - About 3 weeks ago, I received my PCI IDE Card to add another hard drive with. I took my computer apart, re-organized the wires, added the card and the harddrive and re-thermal pasted the HSF. When I turned the computer back on, it wouldn't boot. The D-LINK says that it tries to boot, but then it beeps a few times. Then it tries to boot again and I get the NO HSF warning, even though the HSF is RUNNING! I put in an ASPIRE 500W, which seems to run everything fine, but I can't get the damned thing to work. To top it off, there isn't even any video, so I can't see what the computer is trying to do!

Please please please help me - I go back to school on Saturday and all my work is on my harddrive.

It sounds like the MB isn't reading the heat sink's fan speed properly. Some won't boot if they don't detect a fan spinning at a certain speed. Did you plug the fan into the right header on the motherboard? Did you check what the beep codes mean for your particular MB?

Well, it's not the answer. Now it's saying that my memory is improperly installed. I just reinstalled it, and it's still saying that. FACK!

Try taking the HSF off, cleaning all the thermal grease off, and re-doing it. I had an issue were I thought for 2 days that a mobo was DOA. I was in the process of re-packing it, and after I cleaned off all the Arctic Silver 3 off of the HSF I decided to give it one last try. It worked fine, and never gave me another problem ever again. I am assuming that I must have shorted something during my application of the AS3 that just needed to be cleaned off. Not sure if this will help you or not, but it's worth a try at this point.

...I assume that you have tried removing the PCI-IDE card...?

Good Luck!

Nitro Mullet,

I have tried both of those solutions. I have re-applied Thermal grease over 7 times, and of course I took out the card.

Maybe I should just build a new box.

Remove and carefully reinstall your AGP & RAM. Remove all other cards and hard drives, to see if you get a picture. Once you do, reinstall your other hardware, one at a time.

Refer to your mobo manual or download it from the manufacturers site to figure out exactly what the muliple beeps mean.

Okay guys, I have tried all of your suggestions. Now it tries to boot up/initialize, and it still stalls there. It beeps, and then it just goes silent. No HSF alarm anymore...

/frustration ON
ARGH $@*@#%%%#$ ACK ACK ACK @#&$^%#@$& G*DAM#IT!
/frustration OFF

does it sound like I need a new motherboard? I don't *think* it's my PSU - for when I boot it up, every light turns on, even the CDROM/CDRW/ZIP LEDs, my CCs and Fans....

Thank you

Slow down. At worst you can stick the drive in another machine and get your data off. You have to slowly and with gentle determination back up to point "A". Put everything back together as it was before any upgrades. Make sure your proc is seated properly and the HSF is making good contact. You may need to remove excess paste at this point if you got it anywhere other than the core itself.

arsbanned - I will try that about the HSF. I'm sorry I'm such a freak job at the moment - I'm going back to school soon, so I don't know where I will do my work.

Well, I tried that - the HSF and Proc Core are perfectly greased, with no extra anywhere. Unfortunately, this hasn't remedied the situation. It's so weird - it was all working fine until I re-organized the case.

I guess a new MOBO sounds like the next option.

did you try unhooking all the drives and attempting to boot it up? unhook everything, all you want in there is the mb, ram, cpu, video card and maybe a floppy. if you have the ide cable flipped on one end it can keep the machine from booting up. unplug the ide cables and the power cables, and just have the bare essentials hooked up.

Hi guys - I couldn't figure out the beeps, but I did already try your idea, Fisher. Sarobi, MSI manuals are a pain in the arse - at least for me!

I'm going to consider a new motherboard - Gigabytes have always worked wonderfully for me... Maybe a new case....

if you have more than 1 memory stick, try one at a time, sounds like memory since you've done all the other things. Thought the cpu fan wasn't hooked up, which would fry the cpu even for a couple of seconds, that happens all the time when you reorganize cables in an AMD box....even it is disconnected for 1 second, the no fan could hurt your amd.

Did you try it out of the case? Maybe you messed somethin up reorganizing. Start from scratch like your building a computer and testing it out. Don't just slap everything on then pray it works.

Thank you for your suggestion, Viper. I will do that as soon as I get my new motherboard in the mail. Thank you to all of those who helped me out here - I am still working on the problem.

Do you have the heatsinkfan plugged into the cpu fan header? Some boards won't boot if no fan is detected there.

Did you wear a wrist strap while working on the system. A friend of mine just fried his bios chip from static.

I've used that same board and gotten the message about memory not installed, turns out
that the memory sticks were bad and later the memory brackets shorted out. So that was
RMA'd and everything's been peaceful since.

Pay attention to the D-bracket, it will give you the direction to solve the problem.
Make sure you're not shorting it out when you're touching around inside undoing and redoing
all your connections.
