ok...this should not take so long. i have tried booting from the cd but every time i restart the pc i get a microsoft me startup menu that asks me if i want to boot with cd support, without it, or minimal. i had previously booted the pc with a me boot disk and now i can't get rid of that screen even though i reformatted the drive. if i try running winnt setup it keeps telling me that this program cannot run in dos mode. how can i get windows to install?

Make sure in your bios that your boot order is set to boot from cd-rom first.

"if i try running winnt setup it keeps telling me that this program cannot run in dos mode. how can i get windows to install? "

run d:\i382\winnt.exe dont run setup, or winnt32.exe

Winnt.exe will run in dos so that should solve your problem.

when i run winnt.exe the win200 setup screen appears and asks where the win 2000 files are. it says e:\i386 which is my cd drive. after i hit enter it says it did not detect SmartDrive on my computer and that i shoud exit and restart setup.

ok, i installed smartdrv but now it says setup was unable to install windows boot loader. what should i do?

"setup was unable to install win boot loader.

ensure that your C: drive is formatted and not damaged.

setup cannot continue. press enter to exit."

my drive is formatted but it is on the ata 100 channel...it's recognized when i boot. will win2000 not see the drive?

Broadway, if you don't want to use win2k floppies, then make sure in your bios, you have cd-rom as the first bootup device. Then you should be able to boot to the cd-rom.

secondly, If you want to make boot floppies for win2k, you need to boot up with your ME floppy and hit number 2 (i think) which is boot with cd-rom support. Then you go to the cd-rom drive (d or e). Make sure your win2k cd is in there. Go to the bootdisk directory and type makeboot.exe. You need 4 floppies for this. Then you will be able to boot from floppies.

But all you really need to do is make sure you have your cd-rom as the first bootup device.

What kind of motherboard are you using?

Make the boot disk like Junior77 said you'll need 4 floppy disk. Then boot the machine with the first boot disk I believe it's the 2nd or 3rd disk on the screen it'll say hit f6 to specify controller, then insert a disk with the drivers to your ata100 controller. That should solve your problems.

If you boot from cd-rom just watch it'll say hit f6 if you want to specify controller, so hit f6 insert your floppy disk with the driver for the ata100 controller.
