Please help me ID this case piece

I just got a CHIEFTECH DX-01WD-420W. Pardon my ignorance, but there something that I have no idea what they're for...

In the cardboard box with the screws & keys there's a ring-shaped, dark gray metal piece in it's own little plastic baggie. It's kinda heavy, like maybe there's lead in it or something.

Any clues?

Way too thick for a washer...

Approximately...

Outer diameter: 1"
Inner diameter: 3/4"
Thickness: 7/16"

I thought maybe a lock piece too, except I can't see where. Both locks are in place and fully functional. It's probably something obsolete, like the card guide.

Its a magnet used to reduce interference. Loop the ribbon cable that has Reset, Speaker, Pwr LED, etc. through it.

And Skimo's first post is correct! I knew I had just seen something similar in an older machine at work this week... Couldnt for the life of me figure out where I had seen it though. Now that he mentions it, I am fairly sure he is right.

BTW, welcome to AT Skimo! :-D

I just got the same case, and found the same thing in mine. I was goign to post, but i was waitign to take a pic first. Anywhoo, what do you mean "loop the wires through"? Is this doughnut supposed to sit anywhere specific? or just hang there with the wires goign through the center?

<< Hey, how come Antec or Enermax doesn't put one of those in their cases? I've been gypped.... >>

Because they are not necessary. Just another little POS that you needlessly paid for 😉

Fyi, I had also emailed Chieftec over the weekend, but I figured I'd have to wait too long for a response. But, very nice surprise, they answered first thing this morning (received 6:23 AM Monday!). As usual, the answers I got in this forum were right on the money.

<< Hi Paul,

How do you do? Thank you very much for your support to Chieftec computer chassis wish you like this chassis.

Concerning to your question, the card holder is use for to fix PCI card if card size is pretty long. Normally, PCI card is not so much longer for special computers it may need this function.

The other is Ferrite core, it is design for reduce EMI from chassis, there is a cable from front panel and you can circle the cable in this ferrite core and connect to M/B it will reduce radiation.

Best regards,

Nice to know they respond so quickly!

"und" up? Do you mean "end up"? 😉 Just hangs suspended by the loop in the wires. The last time I saw case switches and LED cables wound between a ferrite loop was in an old-ass Pentium Pro server 😀 Definitely not necessary with today's computers. Think about it, they're just LEDs and power/reset switches! 😛
