Try over in General Hardware or Technical Support

Hey mods, wanna shovel this over into Technical Support? :)

muddog2011, do you play PCMark03? No. So don't get too het up about your "score." ;) But viruses, spyware and such can really slow your computer down so here are some security checkup suggestions for you.

Start by getting your computer patched up at Windows Update, scanning it with Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and fixing the issues MBSA brings up (missing updates, weak/blank passwords and unsecure shares, for example). If you have Office installed, also visit Office Update.

Next, ensure that you have a firewall. It might be in your cable/DSL router, it might be the software firewall in WinXP, it might be free ZoneAlarm basic. This keeps your computer from talking to strange computers behind your back and catching worms. A router plus a software firewall is not a bad idea.

Now get some antivirus software, install it, update it, fully configure it to use all its enhancements (scanning inside Zip files, heuristics, etc) and run a scan. Also try the free online Panda antivirus scanner. If you need some free antivirus software, try Grisoft AVG Free Edition perhaps.

After that, get the free Spybot Search & Destroy and LavaSoft Ad-Aware SE Personal anti-spyware scanners and see how you're doing against spyware, which can slow your system down.

Now you know where you're at on the security stuff. Next, if you didn't already, install your motherboard's chipset drivers, then reboot, and install your video drivers afterwards. They should be done in this order, not the other way. I'm afraid I've never heard of your motherboard, but consult your owner's manual and ensure that the memory modules are in the correct memory slots for dual-channel operation. If you can find me a link to your motherboard's owners' manual, I'll download it and scope it out.

Hope that helps and welcome to the Forums :)

Your computer can be infected by worms directly over your broadband connection in a matter of seconds if you don't have firewall protection from the instant that the network jack goes functional during Windows Setup.

Since you just set up Windows, you can't have too much time into that install. I'd suggest you go back and start from the top. Reinstall Windows again, keeping the computer physically disconnected from the modem until you have at least got your firewall protection in place. I just revamped my worm-B-gon page that's intended to help you with exactly this situation, so take a look and see how I did :)

My suggestion is that you download Service Pack 2 for WinXP and burn it to CD so you can install it while you're not connected to broadband, and also to get a hardware firewall as I mention on that page, so you'll have both a hardware and software firewall AND have the known worm vulnerabilities fixed before you ever expose your computer to the broadband connection. And of course you're going to want antivirus software too.

Besides that, the page above also has links to drivers. If as I guess your board is a VIA-based one, then after installing your service packs, you would install the VIA 4-in-1 motherboard driver package, then reboot, and then install the video drivers AFTER the reboot.

Hang in there bro :)

Only takes a moment to re-infect yourself. Thats why mechBgon went through the time and trouble to make his great security guide ..... which he didn't post the link to this time. (mechBgon, that should be in your sig!)

Still, we are not saying that it IS spyware .... we just want to eliminate it from the possible mix of what can be wrong. If you want to know for sure, post me your HijackThis log. You can get HJT from
HERE.

Since so many on this board seem skeptical of whether or not spyware may be causing problems, lets make a logical analogy here:

When you go to the doctor .... The doctor sends you in for a battery of tests. Your doctor has an educated guess as to what MAY be wrong .... but it may be a number of different things. Those tests are designed to eliminate or pinpoint problems so he can give you the treatment that makes the most sense. We do that also. Spyware/AV scans and logs, temperature and volt readings, symptoms (error codes, event viewer, BSOD's, memory dumps) and what you may have tried .... What you're running (complete specs including OS and updates) all enter into the mix. We want to help everyone .... but the ones that get the best help are the ones who are willing to go the whole route and give us what we ask.

So, lets try this again:

Please be as detailed as what you can be. Did you follow mechBgon's advice when you reformatted/reinstalled? What are your temps/volt readings? Your HJT log? Do you use AV software/firewalls? Is your OS genuine or warez? Give us as much information IN DETAIL, written in a logical way that others understand. The more we have to work with, the better chances YOU have of getting your problem resolved.

P.S. This rant isn't directed at you in particular .... we deal with this every day from a number of posters. Its just frustrating when someone wants help/needs help and then ties our hands.

Hi muddog2011 & Welcome to the forums!

EDIT: can someone tell me where i can get windows xp pro SP2?

Go HERE

Your in good hands with MechBgon, and although DetroitSportsFan is new, he so far seems knowledgeable as well.

I don't do winXP so can't help you there. But you might run some benchies with Sisoft Sandra and/or have a system report with Aida32 (now called Eversest Home edition) to make sure your hardware is set up properely in BIOS (ex. FSB speed, AGP 8x etc.)

Good Luck with the probs

Fern

GET Sissoft Sandra Here

GET Everest Home Edition Here

You can download SP2 from windows update .... or you can get the full "developer's version" in a saveable downloaded form direct from microsoft. That link is HERE.

Not new .... just new here. I got tired of the flames and personal attacks on my old board. So, I changed my screen name, and jumped boards.

about mechBgon .... I've had some little side bar chats with him using the private message system here. He's definately very very good! I'd follow his advice.

Actually?
NO!

Not just because you're running winXP. Its more likely spyware/malware/virus/voltage/temp/driver related than winXP alone. I know ... kinda vague huh .... but you're still not giving us a whole lot to go on.

Where did you get your temps from? Is it under load or not? I'm not even fully sure what the nature of your problem is .... You're not happy with your pcMARK score? Is that the basis of you feeling your system has a problem? I don't know if you've run a full AV scan, checked for spyware, or followed any of the advice we've given so far.

Voltage: You can obtain those values in your bios, by checking with a multimeter, or downloading your board's hardware monitoring tool. (If not, Motherboard monitor works on many mobos.)

You want me to look for spyware/malware? Then give me your HJT log .... I'd be happy to examine that!

Your bios? Possible .... but I don't see how you have it set up. How can I predict that?

I want to help you, but you have to "untie" my hands.
