Please help me get these two NICs installed

I am having serious issues with my PC right now. The following is an attempt to make a long story short.
I have 2 network cards in my pc, a 3COM Fast Etherlink XL, and a SMC base 10 card. I am trying to set up my network with ICS.

I had to contact @HOME b/c I was having trouble with my connection, which we found to be a lack of one of the cards showing up in winipcfg. I was advised to remove TCP/IP for the SMC card and reboot. Well, the computer has not had a stable boot yet since I did that. The computer will show the WIn98 screen, then the screen goes blank and the computer automatically reboots. I take out the SMC card and it boots as it would normally. If I take out the 3com and put in the SMC, the system is pretty unstable; it will boot into windows, but it won't shut down right or it might lock up.

I booted into safe mode and removed the SMC drivers and rebooted the PC again. I get into Windows and plug & play tries to install the card. It installs everything, but again the PC just shuts down (with no user prompt)after the files are copied from the CD.

Is this an IRQ problem? It's odd b/c before I called @HOME, both cards were listed in system properties. Moreover, is the SMC card bad?

I would greatly appreciate your help b/c I am at a loss.

Have you tried them in different slots?

I've had similar problems, and I've always corrected it by swapping slots. Not very technical, but it worked. 🙂

BTW I've run a whole bunch of different combos (@home also), and they've always worked.

The SMC could be bad, but it's most likely an IRQ problem. So be lazy like me, and swap some stuff around. 🙂
