PLEASE help me get around a firewall!

Hi guys! anyways off at college again, but it seems I have a network administrator that's *really* pain in the butt. I've got a firewall that blocks IRC, sometimes FTP sites, and most importantly, I can NOT play an online multiplayer game. 🙁 Can anyone *please* please help me find away around this? I know of proxy servers, but only what they are, not how to go about finding a good one or doing anything. Please help, I'm dying without my UT! 😉

Whatever he is using - software, hardware, or combintation of the 2, ports are closed by default. Many firewalls close these ports by default for safety - closing the backdoor to trojans and other unwanted outside access not only for you but the whole network.

Go to www.grc.com and do a bit of reading on this - this guy is great - plain english for one of the more complex areas of data communication.

Well I realize what the firewall is in place for, but you know how almost every online app has a section for "Firewall" where you can put in a proxy server? It's not like that can cause a lot of harm to use a proxy to play UT or Quake 3 for an hour or so.

Yes, but if they don't have the port opened at the pipe coming to you, you can open every port at your box and give everyone access to it but can't use it because of the denial of access by the security applied before it gets to you.

Think of it as a you are a bank vault. You have opened the door and turned off the alarm at the vault and saying - "hey I'm open, come on in". The front door to the bank it closed and locked - nobody knows that the vault (you) is open or can get in because the front door is closed - crude but accurate.

Gaidal, i don't know what your thinking or if you know anything, but a firewall and proxy server are 2 totally different things. I don't have time to explain it, i'm heading to work, but you need to read some info on these products to get a better understanding of what your trying to talk about.
