I am running winXP on a Maxtor 7200 ata100 drive off of a giga-byte GA-7DXR mobo. BIOS reads the hdd and my plextor 24x both as a PIO mode 4 drives. windows XP pro reads the drives as "MULTI-WORD DMA MODE 2" and both my primary and secondary channels of both my IDE channels is set on "DMA IF AVAILABLE". HOW DO I GET UDMA MODE 5????????

by the way, they are both on different controllers on the mobo.

Strange enough I`ve seen were some ATA66-100 cables dont always work with some drives & controllers...? (just wire so go figure...?) You might try another cable or two...?

Did you connect the wire correctly?

They dont have pretty blue & grey colors for fun ya know, blue goes to mobo, grey goes to slave & black goes to master.

Wierd.. my plex 24X wouldn't burn at 24X (kept using buffer under-run) when the bios (Asus TUSL2) had it on a PIO mode controller and when I switched it to UDMA it was able to burn without buffer under-runs... the bios said that the plex was in mode2 but it also said the HD on that controller was mode5, which I thought was impossible (different UDMA modes on the same controller) but I guess not. In any event, UDMA mode for the cd-rw drive seems to be the way to go, afaik.

cant you change the type of drive is with some software. Maybe it is set has a ata33 instead of ata100. look at maxtors website.
