Please help me find an enjoyable game - I'm starved ...

Hi everyone

This won't be easy to explain but I hope there are people here who feel just like me and who experienced the same thing :) So I'll try to be quick and on topic, let's go :

Problem(s) :

a) I just can't find a good enjoyable game that would hook me to the PC for longer than a moment

b) I'm pretty much stuck with a few games that I like, but how long can one re-play them over and over again ...

Reasons :

a) When I was growing up - I was playing on first Game-Boy, Amiga, first PC's that had like Mario, Prince of Persia and other very old yet memorable games. Then the golden age of PC gaming kicked in from like 1998 into early 2000's. My goodness I was playing games to death back then. Of course I take into consideration the fact that I was much younger and really ABSORBING anything new - also having a lot more time to do it. But the games were crazy good - GTA, Starcraft, Diablo, Unreal, Age of Empires II, Deus Ex, Rollercoaster Tycoon ..... ugh there was so much innovation back in these days and EVERY new game felt like a huge upgrade both visually and in terms of gameplay/new stuff/depth/immersion.

b) Now today we reached that point where graphics are so good it's really hard to impress anymore - but gameplay-wise and immersion-wise it has all been going downhill for quite some time now. There's too many unfinished games nowadays, too many "do this, do that, rinse and repeat" games, too many shallow un-immersive games, DUMBED DOWN games ( I blame consoles for that ) - there just isn't much that would hook me up. I'll tell you how I tried to fix it later.

c) Please keep in mind that I'm talking about single player experience. MMO's and other multiplayer games is a different story - because it's the community/friends and social aspect in general that keeps me playing them.

That's why I'm pretty much stuck with WoW ( social aspect and sentiment ), LoL ( rank up and competitive aspect ) and some other games that I like. Actually I'll tell you what else I have and WHY I like them :

a) ROME : Total War ( first one ) with RTR mod. I like it because I like RTS games and this one combines nice strategy aspect with real time battles which is fun, the battles are satisfying, the politics and moves around the tactical map are fun and deliver A LOT of tension - and I just enjoy playing it from time to time, there is nothing that would turn me off, besides some combat bugs but well, it's an old game.

b) Commandos 1/2 - i don't think it needs introduction - it's just a crazy good game, and I like returning to it even today.

c) STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat - both with Atmosfear mods, gameplay tweak mods, graphic mods. After modding they look AMAZING, the gameplay is smooth, atmosphere is out of this world, IMMERSION is just incredible, the world feels alive, it's scary as hell too, just everything about this game is what I expect from a first person thriller.

d) Jagged Alliance 2 - HUGE sentiment for this game - and with patch 1.13 this game became perfect. Creating my own mercenaries the way I want them to be, no hand-holding, free to explore the island, perfect tactical turn based combat, graphics just perfectly clear to be able to see everything, immersion enhanced by creating your own mercs, RPG elements, just <3.

And umm ... add WoW and LoL to this and it's pretty much it .....

So to sum up I like RTS/RPG/first person/thriller/horror games the most. But I like other genres too. What I NEED from games is immersion ( created by gameplay+graphics+connection with the character ), atmosphere, good story, no dumbed down combat, no hand holding, no perk/achievement unlocking, and again immersion immersion immersion and good gameplay.

What I TRIED and hated/disliked ( just examples ):

1. From RPG genre :

a) Skyrim - I liked it at first but then it turned me off just like Oblivion and Morrowind, because the world didn't feel really alive, the story wasn't interesting, and it just got tedious and boring.

b) Dragon Age Origins - that closed world divided into claustrophobic regions really turned me off - also the combat is meh, I don't really like D&D type of combat, I like real time block/parry/attack combat.

c) Witcher 2/3 - pretty much just like DA:Origins - not really open world, plus I don't like games when I can't CREATE my character, also combat in Witcher 2 made me uninstall the game within an hour. I felt like playing freaking Batman - mashing one button and still winning, ugh.

d) Fallout 3/New Vegas - same like Skyrim - they seem too tedious to me, with wooden animations and generally I couldn't convince myself to play them more. I have high hopes for Fallout 4 though - might get it soon.

e) KOTOR - I hate Star Wars

f) Mass Effect - again, I'm not really into sci-fi. I LOVE astronomy, but not really sci-fi.

g) Kingdoms of Amalur - it's WoW single player, meh

2. Other than RPG :

a) Batman series - horrible combat, couldn't stand more than 15 minutes in the game

b) I like racing games but every new Need for Speed is arcade, every new rally game is arcade, after playing Richard Burns Rally nothing seems to be satisfactory.

c) Alan Wake - got bored after a while, rinse and repeat blind them with a flashlight, shoot them - gameplay boring -> immersion crushed

d) Other horror games like Outlast, Alien Isolation - they're all one-trick-pony, something really scares you for the first time, after that it's just rinse and repeat same scheme, get's boring and annoying.

e) I would try some RTS games but nothing can beat out Total War, Starcraft, AoE and Settlers for me - so that's a dead end too

f) I don't like adventure-type games, don't like platform games so that's out of the question

g) For multiplayer I tried many survival games with my friends but they are all HORRIBLE, unfinished early-access crap. We had amazing times in Rust BEFORE the overhaul - now it's just bullshit.

There are probably a lot more that I didn't mention - but see, the general problems are :

- today's games are developed for consoles and are boring, dumbed down, hand-holding, awful combat, just not for me

- yesterday's games weren't like that - but time passes by and I can't really get over how some games aged

- immersion, atmosphere, good gameplay, something to hook me in is what I'm looking for, also individual character creation

I guess there aren't many games for me, and maybe I just have to wait until such game arises :) You know my perfect game would be character creation based open world RPG with challenging combat, inhabited world that feels ALIVE, story and events in the world adapting to our actions, good atmosphere.

I have high hopes for Kingdom Come : Deliverance, but given that it's early access I doubt it's going to get finished anytime soon ...

I don't want to give up gaming because I like it. I'm just starved .... please if you have any ideas, let me know :)

Sometimes I boot up old games and have a ton of fun in them, despite playing through it many times over. Such as Fallout 1 and 2. Still the best, by far above Bethesda's take on the franchise.

You dislike most RPGs it seems and prefer more strategy, so you're a strategy nut, you like games that force you to think constantly and adapt. Look up more Turn Based Strategy games, lots of them out there like Jagged Alliance 2 (best in its genre!).

Have you played the modern XCOM remake? It's a faithful update to one of those golden-age PC classics. Combat is a little simplified compared to the action-point calculations of the original but depending on difficulty it doesn't so much hold your hand as bite it off.

For the list you posted you seem to be not stuck hating games, you seem to be stuck hating other genre.

Have you tried many indie titles? Some of the games i've played the most was simple but fun games. Take the game Craft The World, easy concept, but its pretty fun, over 200 hours in a $10 steam sale game. Tower defense games are also pretty fun.

You sound like me, as i got older i can't focus on games much. lol

Yeah I get a lot of hate for hating Star Wars xD I'm pretty used to it

But it's just not my cup of tea, I prefer more realistic worlds than Sci-Fi, although I believe it might be interesting - just not for everyone :p

First Deus Ex - I actually played it back in 2000-something and it was good but I remember I somehow got hooked to something else and lost interest or will to get back to it. Now I think the dated graphics might turn me off .... as good as strategy and turn-based games age - first person RPG/shooters don't age that good :/

Looks like I have to try XCOM - thanks for suggesting it :)

As for indie games - yea I try some from time to time and they are a breath of fresh air - but I'm looking more for a title to dig into for a longer period of time, with depth.

As for RPG's - it might seem that I don't like them but I actually LOVE rpg's and it's my favourite genre - it's just that only a few make me want to play them.

My all-time favourite is Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 - anything after that was vastly inferior to the first two. They had open world, good story, wooden but involving combat system, great atmosphere - the only thing they lacked was graphics ( although back then this game looked great ) and character creation.

I tried Risen and liked it - but I also dropped it after some time and I might re-visit it because it is very Gothic-y.

I have high hopes for Deliverance and Mount and Blade II - but they're so far away now, that my RPG hunger is growing :p

I checked Divinity Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity - and even though I liked Neverwinter Nights some time ago I think I don't like D&D combat anymore so it's a huge turn-off - same story with Dragon Age.

This is tough :p ...

If you like Rome TW, have you looked into the newest, Atilla? I haven't played it but have heard some good things about it.

Also for Rome TW, there was a mod called Europa Barbarorum. I played it a good bit years ago.

Someone mentioned the new X-com, that is a very good game.

If you liked Age of Empires 2, there are actually 2 new expansions for it on steam. Some people still play it as well if you want to play mp.

As for indie games, have you looked at 'This War of Mine'? It's very good for what it is, though maybe you are looking for a game with more depth.

"I hate some of the best games of their respective genres"

That's you, OP. How someone as picky as you hasn't tried the indie scene out is odd, to say the least.

I'm kind of like you OP. it takes a really good game to keep my interest anymore. GTA V, The Witcher 3, and The Last of US (PS4) are the best and only games I've really cared about in the last year or 2.

Not much to suggest really, it sounds like you need a break from gaming. Perhaps try the new StarCraft expansion since you like RTS games.

As anyone desperately seeking a game to keep him glued to the PC on the very week Fallout 4 comes out is clearly insane, my suggestion would be Thorazine. ;)

It's also worth pointing out that if you already have Fallout 3 and/or New Vegas on PC, then free mods can make them extremely challenging and - well, not STALKER pretty, but Fallout 4 pretty, replacing textures, skins, animations, etc. Except for draw distance; can't nothing prevent pop-in on the early Fallout games.

If you dont like KOTOR then I shant be giving you any help.

Yea, KOTOR and maybe Skyrim are my favorite games of all time. If one is into fast twitch combat though, I suppose I could see how they would not be that person's cup of tea.

As to the OP, most of my favorite games are on that list he doesnt like, so I have no suggestions, except maybe take up another hobby for a while.

You said you don't like Sci-Fi but Shadowrun (sci-fi/fantasy mix) returns and its sequels (Dragonfall and Hong Kong) are well worth a look.
