Please help me find a PSU

Hi all,

I'm in the process of trying to assemble my work system, and I've tried to research power supplies as best I can, but it's been more difficult than I imagined. I'd originally thought to get an Antec Sonata, but after doing some reading it seems that it will not be suitable for my components. Any recommendations would be helpful. Most important factor is that it can handle the components, which I list below, and have a 24-pin connector since that seems a requisite of most nforce4 boards (and the radeon draws all its power from the board i think). That being said, I would like to keep the cost low if at all possible. As far as cases, the purple Evercase GC4292P at Newegg looks very attractive (and inexpensive!) to me. It provides a nice splash of color without looking gaudy.

Components:
* Nforce4 board (deciding between the DFI and the much cheaper Chaintech...I have no intention of using SLI...ever)
* Athlon 64 3500+ Winchester
* 1 GB PC3200 RAM
* Radeon X800 XL
* Audio card
* 1 DVD-ROM, 1 DVD-RW
* 1 SATA HD (WD Raptor), 1 or 2 IDE HD

The system is mostly going to be used for application development, with heavy emphasis on visual studio and photodraw, as well for occasional gaming which the components should handle fairly well as far as I know. I also have no real intention of upgrading the system in the future unless something breaks, so that's not an important consideration. I may experiment with very slight overclocking just for the novelty of it.

Thanks so much!

Go with the DFI mobo and a Tagan 480 PSU 🙂

edit: Heck, even a 420 will be sufficient, especially if you aren't upgrading. I'm running what I have listed as my sig on a Tagan 380. VERY quiet and no problems whatsoever. *Knocks on wood*

Look at the seasonic's and their efficiency ratings. They are also very very quiet. Give em a glance before you buy.

Thanks for the replies all. I've looked at all the suggestions, and while the Tagan has a manageable price, the oczs and seasonics are all a bit pricey for me. I've spent around $300 on components so far ($220 for video card, $50 for sound card, $30 for dvd-rw) and received the cpu and raptor drive as gifts, and don't want break $650 total for the system. I'm leaning towards the Chaintech for ~$100 and 1gb Kingmax for ~$110, along with the evercase for ~$40, which gives me ~$100 for a psu and miscellaneous stuff like case fans. I was looking at the "AGPB Dual Ceramic Fan 500W" at Newegg for ~$60 shipped... anyone had bad experiences with these (or good for that matter).
