found this from a hot deals site:

Dell.com - PC with P4 2GHz, 256MB, 40GB, for $550 after rebate
(thanks, Keith B.)

Combining the brand new 10% Small Business coupon with other promotions can produce good deals on a new computer. I configured a Dimension 4500 computer like this:
Pentium4 CPU 2.0GHz
256MB memory
1 year limited warranty plus 1 year on-site service
WindowsXP Home
40GB hard drive
no monitor
Nvidia GeForce4 MX 64MB DDR video card
no speakers
10/100 PCI network card
Price after coupon and tax came to $651, and a $100 mail-in rebate is available. Other good computer deals can be found at Dell using this coupon - above is just one computer that I configured.

This is from techbargains.com

Super desktop Dimension 4500 P4-2.4Ghz 128MB DDR/20GB CD XP Home MS Works $649 - 10% coupon - $100 rebate = $484 shipped free. 2Ghz version is $50 less, probably not worth the savings.

Select Desktops, Choose Dimension, Featured Systems under 4500, Customize It on Dimension cheapest, 2.4Ghz, Continue, Add to cart, add coupon: B9549BF60B01

New 10% off coupon code: B9549BF60B01

I bought one of these myself.
This system rocks. There is such a thing as a good manufactured computer. I have built many systems and this one is the best I have ever had. Extrememely quiet.

Yea, the hotdeal the the dimension 4500 cannot be beat.

P4 2.4Ghz Processor (533 FSB)
128MB DDR (Samsung), you might want to add another 256-512 in there, there are only 2 DIMM banks
40 GB HDD ($20 more expensive than the 20GB)

If you dont do 3d, then the ATI Rage 32MB is good enough. If you want to do 3D, than the Ti4200 64MB is a decent deal (although you add $100 to the price).

actually yes there is. if its for someone who does not game, and i don't want to do tech support for, i would have them get a dell w/ 3year onsite warranty.

Exactly! I could build a pc for her. But there is noway i'm going to give her a warrantee. I'm always nice and help when she needs help, but what if a part goes bad? It'll be my fault.

No thank you.

Well I am going to smack myself in the face for saying this, but A few months ago I bought a good premanufactured system. I even bought it from BestBuy, the place I hate more than wal-mart.

I bought it since they had an 18 month no interest deal and the wife needed a PC in a pinch. Otherwise I would have spent about $600 building an nice AMD system.

But going back to my point, you may want to check the VPR matrix line of PCs at Best buy (just tell them to kiss off when they try to sell you a $30 USB cable). I got a 1.8ghz, 512 meg, 80 gig, dvd, cdrw with 17" monitor and printer for $899. I priced similar specs at Dell and Gateway at the time and both were significantly higher. The matrix is actually a decent, very stable system. No integrated graphics crap and comes with an Intel motherboard. Again, no speed demon, but you could probably use this board in a server its so stable.
