I am trying to find a device that will let me stream audio from a computer thru my Lan to another receiving device that will be connected to my AV receiver.

This looks like it would work but is very expensive:

I saw some routers/audio extenders that did this at Fry's a couple of years ago for about $70 each. They don't sell them anymore. Google has not been my friend

Can anybody recommend something in that price range?

Check out network Media players at newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...TabStoreType=5

Here is one exactly that fits the bill.

NETGEAR MP101 Wireless Digital Music Player

Remote control and vivid LCD interface for easy browsing of music collection

vTuner Internet Radio now available with 50 radio stations for free and 1000 more worldwide stations to subscribe to

However there are a whole bunch of others that will do video as well as audio.

I'm one step ahead of you on that :) My buddy has an HTPC with Boxee setup on it that sound goes thru half the house. The other part of the house is wired separately and wants to be able to control it from another laptop. I think this is the perfect solution if the product works.

I've read this about 5 times now and still don't have a clue what you are trying to accomplish.

Sorry, it's confusing i know. My buddy has a weird set up and I didnt explain well. It's trying to be all things to all people. Anyway I just realized that the device I found is not going to work because I need audio over ip and just cat5. The device I found is just using cat5 cable as an extension cable. :( Back to the drawing board.

I have one of these in my garage.

I can stream music from my pc to the device wirelessly. I can either use the unit as a a stand alone player or connect it to my receiver and play out of better speakers in the garage (which is what I do).

here's a quick article I found on them. This unit is old though. I'm sure they have newer/better players available.

wouldn't any media player be able to do that? I know my WD TV Live can do that.

I really like my airport express. It works well with itunes and the best part is being able to use the remote app on my iphone to control it..

....and they're $50-$60 used. You connect it with itunes and can also hook up a printer and junk. Very very useful device

I looked but I don't think it will do the job I want. I want whatever is coming out of the computer's audio jack and have it stream over IP and plug into my audio receiver input. Basically my compter is at one end of the house and my receiver is at the other end. I just need a really really long audio cable to connect the two and want to use the already installed wired Lan to do this.

If something like the WD live could do this I would think I need two of them. One for sending and one for receiving. As far as I understand it they are not designed that but if you are saying it can be done I will look into it more.

USB is for power only. So you might need an ac outlet > usb adapter, but fairly cheap at $150 a set.

How about you list what exactly you are trying to listen to? I figured you want to access media files stored on your computer from where the receiver is?
