Please help me determine my high ping problem

I'm trying to figure out why my ping is so high when I play BF2. This is a brand new computer I built myself a few days ago. I'm using Bellsouth DSL with a D-Link router.

Couple of things I've done/figured out:

-Set ports for BF2 on router
-Vista firewall is not the case

I've never really had any problems playing online games before so this is a shock to me, I never thought I would have these problems so early with a new computer. If anyone has any solutions that may fix this problem, please post them

Thanks in advanced.

FYI: I'm good with computers but terrible at networking and anything that involves the internet.

I just finished playing BF2 tonight miself and I had similar problems when I tried to play on large server with more the 40 people playing. It turns out it was my video card that couldn't handle it with the high resolution.

Doubt it's my system.

Ya your right but I was currious.
So other games didn't get that high pings? or is it after installing Vista?

Doubt it's my system.

Why not take that out of the equation and use lowest graphic settings?

This is where PC troubleshooting and network troubleshooting completely diverge. Reduce it to the lowest common denominator. You can't control your provider, so focus on things you can control.

You can't control your ISP.

Choose servers that give you a lower "ping". 140 ms is pretty good.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I'm just going to have to deal with it. Like you said, you can't control your ISP.

I had that problem and was never entirely able to track it down. It wasn't the system either (2x 7950GX2, x6800, 2GB 1066MHz Corsair XMS2, 4x 76GB Raptors.. I miss her.. =(

Anyways, what I did was go into Documents and Settings/Username and I forget exactly where is the BF2 folder, well I removed it, then restarted the game and let it recreate the folder. I had to resetup my keys but lag was gone. Actually now that I am thinking about it, something makes me think it had to do with using the nvidia software overclocker in windows was causing it, and causing packet loss.

Things you can do to narrow it down:
1. Bypass your router and plug computer directly into the DSL modem
2. Lower video settings to lowest and see if the problem persists.
3. Onboard NIC could possible be the cause..
4. Run a traceroute to the servers you are connecting to: go to a dos prompt type tracert (ip-address)

If you ping that same game server from a dos window as aarondeep says that would tell you if it's your ISP. But could also be your router if you have 1.

How would I be able to check my NIC?
