Hi Guys.

I purchased a basic spreader the other day: Scotts SpeedyGreen 1000 Broadcast Spreader.

Looking @ the reading material supplied with the spreader and Scott's online website, they do not list what number settings release how many lbs per square feet. You are supposed to look at the Scott's product packaging...but the thing is I DO NOT WANT TO USE SCOTT'S LAWN PRODUCTS other than the spreader!

By recommendation of my favorite local store, I purchased a bag of "ferti-lome Weed-Out Plus Lawn Fertilizer" over the Scott's product. The bag calls for 3.2 - 4.0 lbs / 1000 feet.

What should be the setting on my broadcast spreader to spread out 3.2 lb - 4.0lb of weed-out per 1000 feet?

P.S. I called the support line at Scott's and they pretty much said "go to hell" when I said I was not going to be using a Scott's product. Scott's refusal to use basic lbs/feet is much like Bose refusing to give out any information on their speakers. Scott's. Bose. Go to hell!

Now, can YOU help? :)

Find a comparable product in Scotts' line of goods, then just use that setting.

Scott's lacks some of the stuff that ferti-lome products have. I don't want to burn out my grass. I guess another option is to call ferti-lome, or maybe the local dealer guy.

I'm not positive, but wouldn't the broadcast rate depend on the density and size of the particles being spread? In other words, if I were spreading styrofoam pellets and spreading sand on the same setting, I don't think I'd get anywhere near the same pounds per foot, especially since all the styrofoam together wouldn't come close to 1 pound, and the sand would most likely come out faster.

Maybe that's why Scotts couldn't help you?

(edit: although, my example of styrofoam vs. sand is extreme... I don't think there's THAT much of a difference among different brands)

That is what I was thinking. Why not put it on a low flow setting, put in ~3.5 lbs of stuff, and see how far it takes you? That experiment will only take a minute or two and you'll know forever.

Go 1000 sq ft. If you only use half of what you put in, then double the flow setting (assuming it is probably near linear).

If you only use a third of what you put in, the triple the flow setting.

yea its a guessing game. I have a spreader made by ortho. I usually use some local fertilizer that is made for our hard colorado clay soil. What i did was i bought a bag for 5,000 sq feet. I know my front yard is just under 5,000 square feet, so i just set the dial to #2 and went over my yard until the bag was gone. then did the same for the back yard.
