This is more for the people who have tried both. But here are the monitors I am looking to get:

the 30 inch IPS - hp zr30w http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824176177

or

3 X samsung SAMSUNG S23A750D - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001475

or

3 X asus VG278H (which is the new 27 inch not yet released) http://promos.asus.com/us/VG278H/#.TqGYQN7Up9Q

or wait for the newer lightboost benq 120hz ones... the 2420xl

additional info: I am using 2 GTX 580's in SLI (so I am leaning towards the new nvidia 3d ones)

games I want to play:'

1. Swtor
2. diablo 3
3. skyrim
4. Dirt 3
5. Battlefield 3
any others I should look at? maybe LFD2

Definitely the 30" IPS. You will find the panel is the most beautiful to look at and you won't have to be bothered with bezels.

Dunno if this is a brag thread, but assuming it's not, the IPS all day long. I admit I am an IPS snob, but there's a reason. A good quality IPS is worth every penny.

it's not a brag thread.... I just honestly can't decide. If I had tons of money I would maybe get both but I don't..... so I want to be certain of what I want.

I am leaning towards the 3 asus ones though because I have nvidia cards and they support nvidia 3d 2 ....

the thing that turns me off to the IPS panels... it doesn't even appear that they are LED backlit..... is there a reason for that? does LED degrade image quality somehow?

I love my Dell U3011 ... I recall seeing in a review the LED backlight thing has to due with color accuracy and that's really important with these panels aimed at professionals, LEDs giving a blue tint.

I have ran 3 x HP ZR24W's and now running a single ZR30W. Honestly for most games I prefer the single 30" (for other tasks I hands down prefer the 30"). For racing games the landscape triple screen is amazing, but for other games I was less impressed. When running portrait, the bezels were slightly more intrusive compared to landscape.

If you seriously have that budget then you should also be looking at 3 x 24" IPS monitors (U2412M, etc.).

I would never do 3 x 27" nor 3 x 16:9 monitors.

No contest. IPS.

The days of ghosting / lag on TN panels is long gone, 120hz is nice but...meh. Would rather have an IPS

well I would agree that 16:10 is preferable if going 3 screen... I was looking at the u2412m and it seems like it didn't get great reviews in the hardocp forums

Some cheap 24 inch model that I got on black friday. It died so I borrowed a Samsung S24A350H. It was a nice upgrade but I wanted more color.

My background:
Photographer
Videographer
Web Dev
Gaming

Games currently playing:
Deus Ex
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
Dead Island

Operating systems:
OS X for everything but Windows only games

Specs:
Intel i7 2600k
Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3
16 GB ram
MSI Hawk GeForce GTX 460

Hope that helps

Running 3x U2412m's myself and am loving it. I have always preferred IPS screens but I do very little with regards to photography or intensive image work so I can't comment from that perspective.

However if I had the money 1 30" does seem more appealing, though I would most likely add 2 additional 24" monitors in portrait mode for some additional desktop space.

I would go with 2x 27 inch screens (2560x1440), 3x 24 inch (1920x1200), or 1x 30 inch (2560x1600).

Total pixels:
3x 24 = 6,912,000
2x 27 = 7,372,800
1x 30 = 4,096,000

It's pretty close between the 27 inch and 24 inch. At that point it just depends on how you want your desk laid out. I am not a fan of the single 30 inch route.

The 27" is a good option now:

Only 2 left in stock at that price.
It's the new HP 2560x1440 LED backlit btw.
