Please help me create a very simple temporary home network

Computer A is the "new" Rig and I want to keep it as "clean as possible with only the functionality I "need"... This "functionality" includes a temporary connection to computer "B" on a temporary basis to get the files off the old machine to the data drive of the new computer "A".

Computer B is the "previous" rig that I want to dump files from.

Both computers are already able to see the internet through a router. Router is hooked into a cable modem.

So... All I want to do is copy files from the "C:\" drive on the old machine B to the "D:\" drive of the new machine A.

I'd assume this a simple 2 stepo process or something but I don't know how/what order to make this happen, and I don't want to "clog up" the footprint of the new computer with connections I don't need, etc...

Please Help...

Put the PCs in the same workgroup, enable file/print sharing on both PCs(you can remove this on the new one after you're done transfering if you want), enable sharing on the C: drive of the old PC, copy files over and you're done.

Like I said you can remove the file/print sharing when you're done if you want, and disable sharing the C: drive on the old PC when you're done also.

Ok... I've got a "Work group" on the new computer A called "Home". But... under home there are no other computers shown such as the laptop (wireless connection through the router) and the old computer B. All 3 computers are common to the router (and all currently have i-net access), but the only computer that shows up under the new workgroup that I made on the new computer is that new computer. I want to add the laptop and the old computer. Why cant the new workgroup see these machines across the network? How am I supposed to add them if I can't see them to add? Can't get there from here sort of thing...

Funny thing is that the old computer is showing the new computer as an available network location but when I try to access it's files, it says that it can't find the network location... and that I don't have permission.

Another piece of info: Before the whole process was started, the old computer B was the main computer that was file sharing with the laptop... I'm basically trying to make the new computer take the place of the old computer as the "master" network machine that all others connect to...

You have to add each computer to the home workgroup manually as in right-click my computer, properties, network ID tab.

OK... Tried what you said... Still no dice... Guessing at this point it might be something like the NF3 firewall getting in the way... Do you know how to turn this off?

Not sure, check your mobo manual or Google it.

Ok... Success! Thanks for your help! The culprit was the NV Firewall... Off the main page of the NV Firewall interface (its a webpage interface similar to what a router uses during setup...), there was an option to run a wizard to open the firewall along the ports that windows uses for files sharing... I did this and bingo, all works as you described above. The one thing I have yet to find is the master On/Off for the firewall... The NV mainpage eludes to this capability but I can't find it anywhere :|

But, it works now so no worries. Thanks again for your help!

Another question: Once I'm done with the old computer and I want to "clean up" the new rig, do I just physically unplug the old machine from the router... Intuition tells me that if I do, the new computer will no longer see the old machine as part of the workgroup that resides on the new machine...? But... There might be soem "trash" left over from the process of having the old machine as part of the new machine? Is this right? If so, how do I "take out the trash"?

Good deal. If you have a router firewall you could probably just disable it altogether.

As far as the Network, concern there is nothing you need to clean.

If you mapped drive there might be X out mapped drives that you can Unmap.

You can also run a Registry cleaner to get rid of the mapped MRUs.
