Please Help Me Choose: Canon PowerShot S200 or Minolta DiMage X

Please help me decide which camera I should get. The Canon PowerShot S200 or the Minolta DiMage X.
Any comments on either camera will be great. This is going to be my first digital camera purchase.
I chose these two because of its size, battery type, and megapixel range. I don't need anything higher than 2.11mp.
Or maybe any suggestions for other cameras with similiar features will be great too.
Thanks a lot

Canon all the way. Once my brother got one, my mom and I got one as well. They are small, take great photos, AND are durable. I can't tell you how many times I have been drunk, dropped my s200, brushed dirt off of it and it still works.😱

The Dimage X has received a LOT of raves, but the reviews maintain the image quality is average at best for a 2 Mpixel digital camera. Worse off is the vignetting that dpreviews showed. But it is heralded as one of the most convenient point and shoot cameras for newbies.

Based on that, right now I would go with the S200 hot deal at OfficeMax for $200ish for overall quality and value.

However, if I had the bucks, the Dimage Xi is still a top contender with 3 Mpixel + 3x optical zoom (the S230 only has 2X zoom). The upcoming S400 will be tough to beat though.

I have the minolta DimageX and it's been a phenomenal camera so far. It still draws ooh's and ahh's from anyone around. The extra 1x zoom over the s200 does make a difference. Body is all metallic, so its a pretty strong camera. My only gripe about it is that it doesn't remember your last setting, so everytime you turn it on, it resets to automatic mode.

Remember that most reviews were done on the pre-production camera where the corners were all soft and the pictures weren't very sharp. There has since been a revision when it was released that addessed the soft-corner problem, so i suggest you search for a more recent/updated review.

Oh, and did I forget to mention that the camera fits in a cigarette case? 🙂

I had my dad buy the dimage X because he always carry's a camera around and wanted the smallest. This camera is so small it's just insane, takes great pictures too. I don't think there's a camera easier to carry around.

i too have the s200 and love it, dropped it a great many times, and it survived until my sis took it one day and it came back with no compact flash door. off to canon it went, came back one week later, as good (better, since they installed new firmware) as new.

I have the S110 (predecessor to the S200), and I love it! It really takes a beating keeps taking great pics. I've taken my S110 snowboarding numerous times, and it always survives all the crashes I have gotten myself into 😛

thanks for all the replies. I have one more question...which camera would be better off for low light to minimal light situations?

This is where it gets tricky... both are going to be subpar for the single reason that in low light, your shutter speed is significantly slower, meaning you have to hold it still for longer, meaning that a small, light camera is going to be hard to use.

that said, I own an S200 and couldn't be more pleased. At night, be sure to brace yourself against something and pics should come out pretty nice.

I called in the closest office max to me (Hagerstown, MD, about an hour drive away) this morning, they were out of stock on both the a40 and the s200

Ohh... not at all 🙂 the Minolta has just been underrated because everyone and their uncle knows what company Canon is 🙂 In in the film days, Minolta and Fuji were known to have the best lenses~

Thanks for all the input. I spent about 30 min on the phone with office max but in the end the CSR told me her supervisor says they're not substituting the a40 with the s200 anywhere. congrats to those who got in on the deal. I decided to get the Minolta Dimage X, just ordered yesterday.

If you've got Hot Deals skills then buy this Canon PowerShot S200 for $169.

w00t this is easier than I thought.

1) Visited OM asked if they had any Canon A40's in stock? Nope. I played dumb and ignorant, asked well do you have any substitutions? He said nope. I said lying mother $#@! in my head, asked him to please verify, he said well actually we're substituting the S200 for the A40.
2) Shoved my Staples $30 off $150 printable coupon back into my pockets.
3) Asked him do any other local OM's have the S200 in stock but are OOS on the A40?
4) Score!!!
