I have a friend who is buying his first computer, and primarily wants it for gaming. MMORPGs and Fantasy type single player games is likely what he will be doing 80% of the time, maybe 19% browsing the web, and 1% or less doing other crap like media encoding.
Setup 1
Dell E510
3.0 GHz P4 630
1 GB (2X512) 533MHz Dell DDR2 Ram
Geforce 7900 GT
Dell 2405FPW Monitor (24" widescreen 2560X1600)
Setup 2
AMD Athlon64 3800+ Venice (2.4 GHz 512 cache)
2 GB (2X1024) DDR Ram 2 3 3 6
Geforce 7900GT
Dell 2005FPW (20" widescreen 1920X1200)
Obviously the CPU/Ram is much faster on #2, but upgrading from a 2005FPW to a 2405FPW is a huge deal. Both systems are right at his budget, and I cant do option 2 with the 24" monitor.
I figure the monitor is probably the one item you are least likely to want to upgrade in the future, so go bigger now and upgrade the rest later. I also figure with the new Conroe benchmarks, a new mobo/CPU/Ram upgrade in 12-18 months will still leave this setup a smoking gaming computer since the 7900GT should be a viable gaming card for at least 3 years.
Any comments are welcome.
Thanks!
