cliffs: small home business, small volume but high speed monochrome laser printer needed.

I have a small home business. I don't have high volume but when I do print something, it's usually 100 page documents of pure text that i need fast. I'm looking for a high speed monochrome laser, with a 100 page plus output bin, >250 page feed bin. Relatively quiet idle noise is a plus.

Side question: why are lasers rated so fast (ex: 25ppm) but when tested by pcworld/pcmagazine they're 12 ppm -- ?

here are some contenders:

Brother HL-5140

HP Laserjet 1320

Okidata B6300n

thanks for any help...

I thought that I was going to need one recently...until I fixed my old one with a piece of tape 😉 Anyhoo, I shopped it out and was about to buy the HP Laserjet 1220 multifunction. Even now that my old one is working I am still tempted to buy it.
1220

I'm in the same boat as the OP, looking for a new printer for home that my wife and I will share. The models I'm considering are :

HP 2420dn
HP 2320dn
HP 1320n

Samsung 2151N
Samsung 2551N

For the OP, the LJ 1320 seems to be well liked from what I can gather, but it's hard to get a lot of info on printers from the web. The brother seemed to be well recommended as well, supposedly the Samsung printers I am lookng at are made by brother (read that somewhere, not sure if it's true). One thing I read was that the 1320 was slow printing graphics, but text printing was average with other printers.

I'd really like duplex and network capability for my next printer, so I can put it on my network and let my wife print to it as well. The 1320 also has built-in duplex.

Have you looked at toner costs to see if one is more expensive. All of my models were pretty close in toner cost, not enough to rule out any.

Good luck,
Scott

You can save some $$ if you just install a USB printer as shared and keep the associated PC turned on rather than springing for a "network" printer.

I really like my HP 1300. Its fairly cost efficient, and fast. Never had any problems with it, or any of my HP Laserjets in the 8 years I've been using them.

I could, but I don't want to have to leave my PC on all the time 🙂
My wife works at home, and has her own PC, so she would have to turn my PC on just to print. We never really use our PC's at the same time, so it's just too much of a pain to share off of the PC.
