Hi guys and gals- I'm looking for some help with my current build, I used to frequent these forums a lot but over time have lost track of what goes with what and need your help building a new computer.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
I'm going to be using this system primarily for CAD (computer aided drafting) and general household tasks- paying bills, microsoft office applications, web, etc. No gaming. I'd like this to last a couple years.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread.
I'd like to spend no more than $800 US.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
US, most likely Newegg, can't be their customer service.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
I'd prefer to buy an IBM CPU.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
I'm using my current case (ATX) and power supply (500w).

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Yes

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Default speed

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Within the next month.

Other
I want to have both an internal HDD and an external one that I can take with me on business. Can't figure out if CAD applications would benefit from Quad over Dual core...

Appreciate any and all help you can provide. My biggest concerns are matching CPU to Mobo to Ram. Would prefer to go 4GB RAM. Also am hoping I can suck a couple years out of this thing. Thanks again!

Just out of curiosity, an IBM cpu?

explain please, because AMD and Intel are your only real choices for a desktop cpu I think.

What CAD program, is it multi-threaded? Or use GPU acceleration?

Get yourself:
Intel Quad Core CPU
P45 Motherboard
Your budget rules out a professional rendering card so basically just concentrate on CPU.
4GB DDR2-800
WD 640GB HD
Basic graphics card.

Thanks Roguestar, not doing anything that requires professional rendering.
Can you help suggest a cpu/mobo/ram combo that is known to work together? My concern is that mobo's seem to be picky with the ram they accept...

how about a Q6700, asus P5K Pro, Corsair 2 x 2GB DDR2-800 (PC2 6400)?

Most motherboards in the last year or so are actually rather reasonable with RAM provided you buy stuff that'll run at JEDEC specification of 1.8V.

CPU: Intel Q6600
RAM: G.Skill DDR2-800 1.8v
Motherboard: Gigabyte P45 DS3L

All rather highly recommended around these parts.

q6700 is way overpriced,

get a q9300 or q9450

or http://www.microcenter.com/sin...tml?product_id=0287628

both are waaay better

well, at least a little better, for not much more cash, 45nm ftw
