This isn't a good place to ask this question, just so you know.

This system may be alright for a starter system, but usually you get what you pay for. It's refurbed, which isn't very appealing. Plus, it's a technology (Dolby Pro Logic) which is already behind Dolby Digital and DTS.

I would say no. I HATE RCA stuff, and I agree it's behind the times. I personally like refurb stuff. If I were you, I'd spend a few hunderd and get a Sony or Panasonic receiver with Dolby Digital and Prologic, and maybe even DTS. BTW, ProLogic 2 is just around the corner, you may want to wait. Get yourself some nice speakers to go with it.

If you're short on cash, Costco has three systems or four good systems for sale, each with plenty of power and subwoofers. They have a Pioneer, Kenwood, Panasonic, and a JBL. A friend bought the Pioneer. I think all four had Dolby Digital and a couple had DTS. The price range was $300-$400 I believe.

Even tho this is in the wrong place.... You get what you PAY for essentially. Not that you cannot use hot deals and coupons to make them better, but the starting price on speaker systems is generally a decent indicator of the quaulity. If you spend $150 on an entire 5 piece speaker system you are going to get crap. If you spend $2800 on a 5 piece speaker system as I did, you will get quality sound that you won't mind having spent a bundle on. I am not a rich person by any means, and I have never regretting spending that much on speakers. Think of it this way. Spend all you can on speakers... They will NEVER change. The amps and sound systems will, but you will be able to move your speakers to the next system for the rest of your life (if you take care of them). So spend a little more and get something decent.

EDIT - I must agree with 403Forbidden below... BOSE is OVER RATED. Go to any high end audio store such as Hi-Fi buys or similar, and any experienced sales person will agree. Not to steer you to more expensive speakers either. The ones I refer to above were $150 total cheaper than the BOSE I was looking at, and they sound MUCH better.

I don't think you should have Bose as the ultimate goal.

Bose is for non-techie people who want an "ok" system and have lots
of money just to pay for it.

I spent $200 bucks on a 6 piece (JBL) speaker set at ubid. Not a great deal, but they are decently powered and great for the price. Got a good deal on a JVC receiver as well (dd, dts, dpl, many, many a/v switches, only lacking component or an internal composite->s-video converter). Though I hardly spent 2800+ on my setup, it still sounds great (yeah, not nearly as great as some, but I go to the theater for that sound) and I can always switch over to my two big 'ol stereo speakers for music and the like.

To answer your question, that is a pretty horrid deal (I think this has pretty much been covered). In the Sunday circulars you can usually find a Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic decoder and 6 speaker package for like 400 bucks (Ok, maybe not DTS all the time). I suppose if you just want it for a receiver, and are powering a 5x5 room, it's OK. Otherwise, look for a better receiver elsewhere. You will absolutely not get "surround" sound in the sense most are accustomed to with this receiver. Only a 3 channel mix. If you are looking for a DVD sound system, you want at least a Dolby Digital capable receiver/decoder. Note that, if this receiver has an analog 5.1 input, you could buy a DD/DTS decoder seperately, but really you may as well get the whole shabang at once eh?

I think BOSE are great if you get the right ones!! Here is my system

Denon AVR 5700 Receiver THX Ultra Certified 140Wx5
Carver 375W Amp (going to my main speakers)
Main Speakers BOSE 901 Series VI (rated at 450W)
Center Channel Klipsch
Surrounds BOSE Acoustomass 5 (4 tiny cubes and 1 bass module Rated at 200w)
Atlantic Subwoofer 15inch 300W

The mains I agree are'nt great for bass heavy music but that is why you get a subwoofer!!
Bose 901's are some of the only speakers you can buy that are rated to handle 450W!!
Just my opinion!!

For a good deal on speakers, try Paradigm Performance Series, B&W performance stuff, Tannoy speakers, Energy, or Infinity Interlude bookshelfs. Generally, they cost about $120-200 a pair, but they will be heads and shoulders above the cheap stuff. They will also sound better than any bose cube system, with better midrange, and much better imaging.

go to 800.com or even circuit city... they have a kenwood system for $500 with dts and everything... 100 watt powered sub... left, right, center and surround sound speakers. i got mine and it works great... its brand new.

granted, its quite a bit more than the RCA, but why spend money on something that you'll upgrade later? $500 is a great deal for what you get!

Bose is SUCK. Overpriced, plastic box, paper speaker, awful sound quality, etc. (venting years of experience with this crap.) Truthseeker the 901's might be rated at 450watts but I can also rate my Pc speaker at 450watts also. It doesn't mean by any stretch of the imagination it will reach that limit. Wattage rating are suck. You also don't need a lot of money for a nice system. I spent only $100 a pair for JBL HP6B's that retail for $600 a pair. Shop around for other deals and stay away from Bose.
