This is my first time building a computer.
I just received my Intel chip (socket 775) today. For the installation, I am using the stock heat sink and fan. As you may already know, the Intel heatsink comes pre-installed with the thermal compound on the bottom of the heatsink.
Here is the problem, while installing the heatsink, I placed it on top of the CPU and after the first attempt I could not get the clips to click into the motherboard. So, I took off the heatsink and realized the thermal compound has now been "mushed" and spread onto the cpu. So, I immediately placed the heatsink back onto the CPU and was finally able to get the clips to click.
My question is whether I will need to replace the thermal compound with a new compound because I placed it onto the CPU, then immediately took it off and placed it back on again?
I hope this is not confusing. I apologize for the long entry. Thank you for your time and assistance.
