Please help; I'm very confused about today's video cards. Need as many suggestions as possible

I need to buy a video card for my system and someone recommended a GEForce2. Under Leadtek video cards at Newegg I learned that there's a GEforce2 MX, 2MX SH Pro, MX DH pro, etc. I just want a card to play today's games and run dvds without worrying about skipped frames. I know nothing about SDRam vs. ddr or 6ns vs 5ns so the reviews on various websites are too detailed for me. I don't want to spend over ~$100-115 unless the games today require the expensive card like the GEforce GTS.Please help.:frown:

To play today's most demanding games and the games that are right around the corner you might need to spend a little more than $100-$115. A Geforce2 MX might suffice if you only game occasionally, but personally I would shell out a little bit more cash and get something faster. For the price you can't beat the 64MB MSI Geforce2 Pro that is at Newegg. The Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 Kyro II is another one to consider. Or if you want to save some money and are comfortable with tinkering a bit you can get the ATI Radeon LE and tweak it and overclock it so that it performs as well as a standard Radeon.

I haven't gotten it yet but I bought a Radeon LE from www.newegg.com for $70 on Monday and its suppost to be a real nice card. It has hyper Z disable in D3D which slows it down but all you have to do is download a tweak program and it will turn it back on and overclock it up to normal radeon speeds and it is suppost to perfrom just like the full blown $130 32meg ddr Radeon.

Is 32mpeg ddr ram better than 64meg sdram?

Depends on the card. But just comparing the memory, DDR is better than SDR if both types of memory are the same width.

<< I second the Kyro II. Check it out at Hercules.com. I think it's about $150. >>

I 3rd it. Its like 110 without tv out from newegg, and 130 with tv out. It has very very nice 2D, and I got the tv out for free so hey ;)

Bronx:

It would greatly help if we knew what kind of games you planned on playing, as that might influence our recommendations.

But in general, the Radeon LE noted above for around $70 is FAR and away the best bang for your buck right now. Fairly fast, and superior image quality (both 2D & 3D) to any GeForce card so far (can't comment on GF3 series - haven't seen one in person, but you aren't wanting to spend $300 or more either ...).

Thanks for the replies. I just want to be able to keep up with today's games (quake3 etc.) It seems like the kyro 2 is popular amongst the experts here. Midnight Rambler, is the Radeon LE better than any of the geforce, only after overclocking? I don't know how to overclock so I think I'd rather get one that I don't have to mess with. I guess nobody really argued for the GTS over the others like the kyro 2 (for some reason I thought GTS was the better of the bunch within my budget). Thanks again. :)

i'm sort of in the same situation that you are. From what i've been hearing the Kyro 2, for about $110, seems like a really good card for the money and it seems to perform well in pretty much anything 2d or 3d. As of now thats probably what i will use in my new system unless i find a good reason to use something else.
