Hello,

I have a UFCDRD (Unidentified Flying CD-ROM Drive)

Seriously though, I recently built a new computer, using some parts from my older computer, and one of those parts happened to be the CD-ROM drive (since I had no reason to buy a new one). My original computer was built by a local computer shop. Asking the computer shop at the moment is out of the question.

The CD-ROM drive is a 50x (which it states on the front of it) but thats all I know. I can't seem to find any other writing on it or indentification stickers. Windows device manager doesn't help either, since the device is using a generic Windows 50x EIDE driver. I am wondering if there is any program I can download that will help me identify my drive?

Thanks

not on the whole drive (ie: what's normally inside your case) either?

anyway, download the very useful demo of SiSoft Sandra here:

http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/sandra

use the Drives Information module and you should hopefully get a name......but again, if device manager says nothing, it might not work.....but, it's worth a try :)

It's not important that windows has a name for the drive if it has already installed drivers for it and it works!
It could be just a generic drive that doesn't return any ID to Windows.
There is nothing at all on it? Numbers, FCC numbers?
You could try going to Run/msinfo32 and go to Components/Storage and see if there is anything listed.

Funny things they r sometimes, 'couse i've got a cd-rom drive, and all it says on the front is 'compact disk', it's only got the EJECT button, the busy LED, and a tine little hole for an emergency eject. It doesn't say nothing about the speed, manufacturer, only the model - CDU311. I've got it for about a year now, i've found out the speed which is 8x from a little diagnostic app which came with a game called Alpha-Centauri. I've also found out the make which is SONY....
Anyway, where was I ?? :D

There are also two other ways to see a CD ROM drive's I.D. Right after the memory check in PST, you usually see a list of ATAPI devices, etc. It is listed there if it has one. Next, in Windows, it is also listed in Device Manager under the CD ROM. Mine is stated as a Pioneer DR-A04S.
