PLEASE HELP FAST :(

I was working on my computer, just surfing the internet, and my cd burner opened but didnt open all the way and started grinding. I turned off the computer and turned on the computer, the usb did not work so i reset the cmos and restarted, it all worked good until a bit later the burning light on the cd burner went on. i restarted and then the read light on the cd went on. I took the cd burner out of the computer and everything works good now, the burner smells like rotten fish. why would this happen? is it just the cd burner going bad or is it something with my motherboard that caused it?

thank you
justin straub

i've never heard of or seen this one before, but it appears u have isolated the problem to ur burner. if ur cdrw smells like fish, i'd prolly say dump it and get a new one. if the next one dies on u too... at least the warranty will cover it and u can fiddle with the mobo.

<< the burner smells like rotten fish >>

thats the craziest thing i've ever heard

sounds like the burner is fried...what kind, and how old is it?

Any possibility that the hot oil from deep frying the fish splattered into the drive and shorted it out? It's safer to use the drive as a cup holder.

LOL yeah, never use the cd tray as a cup holder, it sounds like the cd drive may have gone bad, although that usb problem perplexes me (unless you booted in safe mode, then there is the reason) I know of viruses that will open the cd drive, but I haven't heard of any of them doing physical harm, run a virus checker, and update your definitions to be on the safe side. On a side not, I have this drive, and had a few problems getting it set up, but after that it has been a great drive (no coasters made)

Well now that I think about it the USB may have been working. It may just have locked up on the login screen booting up and I assumed that the USB didnt work because I could not move the mouse(USB mouse). But anways I RMA'D the drive because it had a few months left on the warranty.
