My thing is that the car has 160XXXX miles on it. The car runs good looks good but how much is a expired inspection. And is it poins on you license and or will your insurance go up? We live in NY state.

thanks. I say pay the fine if you get pulled over. Or just start crying poverty ;) shes a chick.

Hell if I know. The only "inspection" we have in CA is smog. They don't ceck to make sure the car actually functions aside from the emissions levels. That said, I wouldn't buy a new one in a 10 year old saturn.

I agree with notfred... unless you have a huge crack across your whole windshield that it actually blocks your view... which is why cops get anal about it. But my dad replaced the windshield on our 10 year old car... after looking around for a week...he found one for $120... no problems ever since. :)

$500?!!! When my '91 Dodge Spirit needed a new windshield it was only $130, and they even came over to install it at my dad's work.

EDIT: I also live in NY(upstate, NYC sucks). I got an expired inspection ticket once. It was only $35.

With a million and a half miles, I would just say it is time for a new car.

I know I know tell her that.

I found some info though.

What are the penalties for not having an inspection?

Registration Renewal Denied - You will not be able to renew your registration if there is no record on the DMV file that your vehicle had passed an emissions inspection within the year prior to the date you renew your registration. Inspection stations electronically send DMV a record of all emission inspections. We suggest you keep the receipt portion of your emissions inspection sticker to have as your proof that the vehicle passed inspection.
Fines - If an inspection sticker is on the vehicle, but expired within the last 60 days, the fine is between $25 and $50. If no inspection sticker or expired more than 60 days, the fine is between $50 and $100. There is also a $30 mandatory state surcharge in addition to the fine. Also, failure to have an inspection may result in denial of your vehicle registration or renewal.
Parking Violations - Failure to have a valid inspection sticker on a parked vehicle may also result in a parking violation.

If it's insured for comprehensive with no deductable on the glass, it's time for that new windshield.

Otherwise, how's the rest of the car?

As long as it's not one of the oil burners, Saturn engines are pretty durable. If it doesn't have any other problems, there's no need for a new car IMHO, unless it's going to be a brand new one, or one that's less than half the age and half the miles (and a hell of a lot more than $500!)

Yeah, $500 is a lot, but the earlier Saturns have that wrap-around curved glass. I don't know how much that affects the price of the glass and labor.

(EDIT: If you can find a shop that does USED glass, you might get a much better price.)
