Hi all,

I want to buy ram for this board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813157172

I am considering following options for Ram:
(g.skill 4gb) http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231193

or
(patriot G series 'sector 5' edition 4gb)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820220436

or
(patriot viper II sector 5 4gb)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/..._-20-220-431-_-Product

The third one has a "cas latency" 6-6-6-20, and the first two options both have cas latency: 9-9-9-24, which one is better? I dont know anything about these figures, if you can briefly/simply describe what these figures mean that would be great.

OR, would you please recommend something that is better than these, ie, faster and around the prices that the above are (should be 4gb)?

thanks,

..ab

The last Patriot Viper you listed is rated at 1.7V and is therefore not suitable for your board. Intel advises running RAM at 1.65V or lower. Any of the other RAM previously linked should work fine. For example:

1600 CL7 for $95 shipped
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231279

1333 CL7 for $89 shipped
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231276

1333 CL8 for $85 shipped
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231275

1333 CL9 for $80 shipped
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231274

1600 CL9 for $80 shipped (according to NewEgg on sale $5)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231277

I only listed out G.Skill because I'd been looking at them lately. Of course there's other options. Here's an OCZ Platinum 1333 CL7 for $89 shipped (NewEgg says on sale $9):

Hi, thanks for the reply, @ekoostik: by "not suitable", do you mean it wont run at all, or something else? I have asked my friend to buy for me, I have to check with him if he has bought it already or not.

I tried to find some good information for you but am having trouble coming up with anything definitive. From what I understood, Intel only officially supports RAM of up to 1.65V. This was a new requirement beginning with the i7 9xx's. They made a big deal out of it then. I haven't heard as much about it since the release of the i5 & i7 8xx's.

My guess is it will still run. But could cause it to be too hot, overdraw power. That being said, I just checked the Qualified Vendor List (supported RAM) for the motherboard I was considering and am surprised to see some RAM with V > 1.65 list.

If you haven't already, I would post this question specifically as a separate forum question and see what kind of helpful information you get. If you do, please send me a link to the posting. I'd like to see what people have to say.
