1) Go to newegg.
2) pick a motherboard you like
3) a) go to the manufacturer's site and check out:
3) b) which processors it supports
3) c) which memory it supports
4) and buy it
5) Insert a video card and a hard drive

and bingo, you have a computer.

For multitasking, you can either get yourself a Athlon dual core, or a Intel P4 with hyper threading.

if you dont game intel is the way to go !

Pentium D 820 2x1MB 2.8GHz (775) - Retail $248
Motherboard ASUS 945P P5LD2 $132
Memory Corsair PC-4200 2x1024MB Value $163
Optical Drive NEC 3540A Black dvd burner $42
Case and Power Supply Antec Sonata II + SmartPower 2.0 450W PSU $115

as for the video card well just get the cheapest one you can find or look for a motherboard that has On board video persoanlly i would get a cheap 6600 tc or a x700 pro

i dont know what kind of hardrive you need either how much space you looking for ?

also i dont know your budget but if you can afford it go with a 830 instead

Is it true that Pentium D has overheating issues? And also, how the heck do you install 2 CPUs? I never built a computer before.

If you're just looking for an inexpensive net surfer kind of rig-- go Dell or HP.
It's hard to beat them if you are spending less than 1k total on a system.

forget single core. u stated u want a computer that's fast at multi tasking. that's what dula core processors are meant for. the cpu in my sig's not bad. strap on 1 gig of pc4200 ram (or 2 while you're at it) and get any motherboard that fits it and has the extras you want. i agree with Gadzookie, get a 6600 or an x700pro. each can be had at a little over $100 on newegg, i believe.

There are many reviews that the Penitum D has overheating issues, and since im a n00b at building pcs, i dont want my computer to explode when i turn it on and burn my house down. :Q

i would stick with socket lga 775 i also recomend this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116197

also look for intel processors that are above 630 i think those are the ones that have 64 bit support

I think i will get the Penitum D instead... does the Penitum D support 64 bit? Also, do Pentium D tend to overheat a lot? People say they do in teh reviews

i dont think they over heat unless you overclock them YES intel procs are hotter then AMD processors but that doesnt mean there overheating i htink thats what scaring you

if you do plan on overclocking then you will need a better HSF

yes the pentium d has 64 support i still recomend the 830 proc at 3ghz :)

Just make sure you buy everything OEM. Buying retail is a complete waste, especially CPU's, MB's, and RAM!

I heard buying OEM CPU's are very risky

From whom?
