I reinstalled windows last night, because of an error with zonealarm, so anyways, everything seems good, i install the drivers for my mobo, then for my videocard. But for some reason my internet doesn't work, the onboard ethernet don't work, so i have been using a kingston eithernet card, which worked fine before i reinstalled, it doesn't work in any other slot than the first PCI, i know it's bad for video card, but nothing i can do about it. Anyone have any idea what i can do to get it to work, because i really need internet(yes i need it) i have tried everything i can think of, if you know of something, please tell me.

What sort of internet connection is it?

Is it a cable connection that runs directly from the cable modem to the network card?

If so, the cable company is probably doing MAC address monitoring and you'll have to call them up to figure out how to update their MAC address tables for the new network card.

"the onboard ethernet doesn't work"

I think you answered your own question. Step two is solving it. You probably just have to re-install the driver from the disk that came with it... that, or somehow the port went bad and won't work anymore.

Yes, this IS the wrong forum, too.

Where would i put it, i am connected threw a network with my cable, both my moms and my brothers computers are going fine, nothing i have tried to fix the onboard with works, it was working ok before i had to reinstall windows because zonealarm blocked the connection within 10 minutes of a reboot, i couldn't fix that, so reinstalled

Good Job, Ace.
Look on the NIC for the manufacturer / model.
Get on different computer. Go to Manufacturer's website. Download latest drivers. Burn to cd. Install drivers from said cd on fuxored computer. Run ipconfig (ipcfg for win98) release and renew. Somewhere along the way plug in Cat5 to card. Test.

As for troubleshooting this, check to see that windows has recognized the card properly. If so, check lights on back of NIC and lights on router to ensure physical connectivity.

If that doesn't work buy a book and <insert obligatory RTFM comment>.

In 98, it's "winipcfg." And those instructions are a little out of order.

Switched out modem with my old one from old comp, works like a charm now, i guess the card was just bad.
