Please help - Can browse network, but no ping

I've got my first home network set up and apparently running ok since I can transfer files successfully, but I can't get a ping between the machines. Net diag says the network is ok, too. TCP/IP is installed and with a static IP for each machine. I uninstalled Zonealarm and tried pinging localhost, etc as suggested in this thread and everything seems ok until I try to ping the other machine. Can somebody help me figure what's wrong?
