Please help, can´t get my VP6 to work...

Got a VP6 board the other day and I can´t get it to work properly. With dual 1 Ghz P3 512MB Ram and Matrox G450 I get BSOD "Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal" at w2k boot. I tried a lot of different drivers and AGP settings in BIOS, Updated G450 BIOS but I´m starting to loose my faith here :(. With one CPU everything runs fine and with a PCI graphics adapter it runs fine on dual CPU. No IRQ sharing no memory conflicts...

I noticed that when using a singe CPU one one of the sockets is usable (the one by the AGP slot). Is that how it supposed to be?

Is there anyone who can help me? Anyone running a similar setup?

Help please :)

/Johannes

i assume you have removed everything from your system except the mem, cpu and gfx card

try assigning an IRQ to VGA in the bios

lastly.. driver_irql_not blah blah usually gives more info.. can you post it all?

Got rid of the BSoD problem by swithching AGP to 1X. The problem with the CPU sockets derived from the BIOS not detecting the CPU properly, a "soft reset" in BIOS helped.

But I still got problems... After a couple of minutes of use the system freezes completely. I tried a Geforce 2 MX card as well and get the same problem. A PCI graphics card (Nvidia Vanta) works fine. With only one CPU in mobo all cards work fine.

No IRQ conflicts, no other cards in. Thinking about returning my VP6...

I have the same type of problem that you are having. Windows 2000, SP1 locks up at various points in the logon process or shortly there after. I'm using an Annihilator Pro AGP with two CPUs. With a PCI Matrox card the system works just fine. I did not experiment with one CPU. Hardware consists of (2) IBM 307045 in striped configuration and two Crucial 256 memory sticks running at 133MHz, no other cards in the system. I'm running Creative's V6.34 video driver. I may reinstall the OS and not install VCPI as suggested on another thread on the VP6.
Hope you have had better luck.

The latest matrox drivers made running at AGP4X possible but i still get lockups when using the AGP adapter and 2 CPUs.

I´m currently running the ABIT beta BIOS (WK) for the VP6. When changing configurations (even installing software) the system does not boot normally (doesn´t report the CPUs when booting) until I enable force update in BIOS. The same problem was there with the UR-BIOS but seems to occur more often now. (This happends independently from harware configuration). Is this normal?

I talked with Creative Labs today and they stated that their drivers are not compatible with two CPUs. I tried Nvidia's V6.50 driver and had no luck. I haven't found any information on drivers that are SMP compatible.

I am using a BP6 in dual config with win2k and a tnt2u. Their drivers work fine for me. I guess it is a problem they are having with geforce based cards.

When you switch to one cpu, make sure you adjust windows to accept the switch before you take out the processor. I believe it is in the device manager, but i do not remember exactly how.

If you haven't already done this, strip the motherboard to just one memory module and a video card. If this doesn't help, what audio signal is the motherboard giving when you turn on the computer?

cool, yet another vp6 owner.

i would suggest a format to begin with, but if you wanna skip that:

first, yeah, only video card and 2 cpus, and apply the via - intel patch:

patch

that solved problems for my radeon and its latest drivers combined with dx8a, a nasty combo, but never really a problem, i was supposed to get that patch to otherwise it dont work. the patch resolves agp issues with via boards.

i know i had to but it to 1x agp, but after patch i bumped back up to 4x.

i love this board. make sure you dont plug regular ide cables to the raid. i fried a hard drive. i know it has nothing to do with this. im just retarded.:)

Not sure about why your setup is fighting you.

Here's my configuration:

(2) P3 700 cc0 @ 1001 MHz (7.0x143)
VP6
256 MB stick of PC-133
20 GB Maxtor Ata-100
GF2 GTS 64 mb
3com 10/100 Nic
Hollywood+ decoder
SBLive! X-Gamer
Adaptec 2940UW
40x Plextor
8x4x24x Yamaha
Ide Zip

I figured I would have problems with something, but Win2k just installed and ran perfectly without an issue from the get go. I am using DX8a, the 1050 beta drivers, and my GF2 is working great. In fact, it is a Creative Labs OEM card. I am also using the beta bios. So, as for incompatibilities with GeForce cards and dual cpu usage under Win2k, bah! Hope you get this working, but I don't think it is an incompatibility with your GeForce2 MX and the board. I think you may have a bad board, procs, or memory. Something just isn't right with one piece of constantly used hardware.

Good luck.

Success:
VP6 (2) 700E===>933MHz
(2) 45GB IBM in striped RAID
Annihilator Pro
3CR990-TX-97

Windows 2000 w/SP1
4-in-1 V4.29
Q261606
DX8.0a
Nvidia V10.80 2/27/2001
Now I can start fighting with Live-X-Gamer

Have you tried flashing your BIOS with the most recent certified BIOS, not BETA? BETA BIOS's are BETA for a reason. Stick with the certified ones until you get your problems sorted out.
