I have one directory with about 1800 mp3s... About 1300 of them were backed up onto CD-R two years ago...

It took me a while to think of the best way to cross-reference the ones I already have so I can pick out the newer ones and back them up...

My idea is to take the playlists of each CD and dump them into a table in Access, and then do a comparison query(no duplicates) of that column and my current playlist...

Anyone have any other suggestions? I'm assuming someone has run into this problem before...

Honestly, once you get a large collection, it is easier to keep a spare hard drive around. Then you can keep a second copy.

In your case, I am not sure. Your idea of creating a small db sounds good, but like a ton of work. If they are all singles, then that is probably the best deal. If they are albums, then you could probably get it done by hand faster.

I did it by hand with about 7 gig on my backup. I just merged everything onto one drive, and rebacked it up. I had to go through and hand pick the duplicates, though.

they're all singles but i'm very experienced w/ the database stuff...

i just need to find my box of CD backups... it'd be pretty tough to sort through and find 500 out of 1800 by hand, that's why it's been 2 years since i last backed up....

yeah i put a playlist of the contents of each CD on the CD itself... didn't have local copy but it wouldn't have mattered because a month after i backed em up my HD crashed...
