I bought the retail cpu, and in the directions it says to remove the film from the back of the heat sink. The picture in the manual looks more like a sticker with writing on the back, while the one I have is a light orange paste. I started to take a little off, but none is coming off like a film. What am I supposed to do?

That freaked me out too. There's no sticky backing to peel off.

Keep reading. There are several posts on that exact same topic already.

1 more thing. when trying to put on the retention clips, i have to use an awful lot of force. is this normal?

yes. this is why some people use shims - to protect their core. just be careful, or there'll be one more horror story of another cracked core.

Use a flathead screwdriver and be careful to keep the HS level and square with the socket. Don't allow the HSF to twist or tip too much. The orange stuff you're describing sounds like thermal tape or compound. Most users will scrape this off in favor of thermal paste like Arctic Silver II, but you should be fine with the compound if you don't plan to do any overclocking. Here is something every AMD builder should read. Good luck!

Basically, its sort of a sticker on the paste. If u can't find it, most probably the dealer had remove tht for u. Most dealer did...coz ppl dun read the instruction...fried their new CPU !.

On the clip...yeah use a flat head screwdriver to install. Just be careful not to slip the screwdriver onto the mobo & damage it.

My retail cpu arrived the same way. I sent an email to AMD but so far no reply. Although others have mentioned that there were similar postings elsewhere, I could not find any. What did you end up doing?
