I am in the process of building a new computer, this is the first computer I have built, can you guys take a look at it and tell me if I should make any changes or not

CPU: AMD Thunderbird 900Motherboard: Abit Socket A Ultra ATA100 Raid VIA KT133 ATX
Video Card: Asus V7700 Pure GeForce II GTS 64MB
Monitor: Samsung Dynaflat 955DF 19" .20mm 1600X1200
Ram: 256mb PC-133
Hard Drive: IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30GB UDMA100 7200RPM 2MB Cache
CDRW: Hewlette Packard 9100i 8x4x32
CD-ROM: Creative Labs 52x
Sound Card: Soundblaster Live 1024 w/ Digital Out
Mouse: Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse USB
Keyboard: Microsoft Internet Keyboard
Floppy Drive: Panasonic 1.44 FDD
Case: Blue Case w/ 2 Extra Case Fans 300w Power Supply
Modem: Motorolla 56K V.90 PCI
Speakers: Altec Lansing ACS54 4 Speaker + Sub (Surround)
Network Cards: Two D-Link 538-T PCI
Hub: D-Link 5 Port 10/100 Base T

Also, I am looking for a really good heatsink/fan for the t-bird 900, I have heard good things about Golden Orb fan's, but I've heard they don't work well with KT-7 RAID boards, Can you guys suggest a good heatsink/fan combo for a t-bird 900 which is going to be overclocked and a Abit kt-7 RAID.

Thanks!

Looks like a kick-@ss system. I am unknowledgeable about heatsink/fans for athlons, so I'll let someone else take that one. The only suggestion that I have is... If you don't need the raid setup you could save a few dollars and get the KT7. I only noticed one hard drive. That is the only reason I say this. Other than that, nothing sticks out at me. Good Luck.

You want to get the Thermaltake Chrome Orb for your CPU.

Just make sure you put it on the correct way, and be patient and careful when putting it on. There are 4 capacitors right beside the socket that you have to be careful with. (you dont wanna scratch them - you can bend them a little bit)

[edit]you can also file part of the heatsink off if you dont feel like bending the capacitors[/edit]

well, the reason for the raid is becuase I don't think the non raid board supports ata100, I want the ata100 support for the harddrive. It is only about 10 dollars more in price.. not a big deal..

I am in search for the best socket-A fan/headsink that will fit on a kt-7 raid.. does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, the way the system is right now, do you guys have any estimates on what kind of FPS I could expect to see in Quake III, I can't find a review on a computer like this, most of them just use like 750mhz processors, 128 ram and the 32meg geforce2 card.. I can't find one that is tested with 900mhz, 256 ram and the 64meg card

Since its such a kicka$$ system, replace the CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM 😛. and oh! upgrade to Plexitor CD writer 🙂

well, I already have the burner, and I have a home DVD player, I don't really need one at this time

I know it sounds crazy, but you may want to consider two DIFFERENT NICs. Makes it easier to differentiate between them during setup.

You can probably save a few bucks if you went with a slower CD rom (lower in numbers ie. 40X). Since CD-ROM drives don't actually read cd's at 52X. 36X is more then enough, but go for a 40X if 36X feels inferior (unless its a Kenwood 72X 😉).

ata 100 is useless(and some people have problems with it enabled) ata66 can barely be touched by the fastest hard drives(in the best situations)

<< Case: Blue Case w/ 2 Extra Case Fans 300w Power Supply >>

Just be sure to make sure the PS is Athlon Approved since you have a lot of pieces of hardware that love the juice . 🙂

<<I don't think the non raid board supports ata100>>

The Asus A7V is a board that supports ATA100 without RAID. Later revisions of the MSI K7T Pro2 will also incorporate 686B southbridge which features ATA100. So no, you dont need RAID to have ATA100, they dont have anything to do with each other either.

a) What RAM? Mushkin, Micron, my favorite the VC133 by Kingston? Or the King: Corsair.
b) Heatsink/fan = Alpha6035 with new clip or Global Win fop32-1

I'm pretty sure that I want to stick with the abit board, I have heard a lot of good things about them, and they have the softmenu and they are suppose to be good for oc'ing the tbird, i'm sure the other board is the same, but the abit board will be easier for me to get where I am.

To be honest, I have no idea what kind of ram it is, I just specified 256 pc-133 ram, I am beginning to realize that rams makes a big difference when it comes to oc'ing.

So, you think the Alpha would be a good choice? will it work with the raid board? .. do you know what alpha's website is? or somewhere I can find more information on that cooler?

dude. kick@ass system.. all i can say is get the kenwood 72x cdrom.. for 82$ its a awesome deal.. ($82 at pricewatch right now as of 10/31)you will notice a huge difference from any other cdrom.. (make sure you put it on the second ide channel and get the lastest firmware) hope this helps...

Have you thoroughy investigated the Abit Kt7?

Regardless, here is a link to a good Abit help site. Go to "heat issues" for info on the alpha and more.

Cool, thanks a lot for your replies. I don't think that I will be needing a 72x CD-ROM, I wasn't even planning on getting one, I was just going to use the burner as the cd-rom.. but then I thought that I might want to do cd-cd copies, so I put one in, it was only like $60 canadian.

I just got the monitor in today, i'm loving it, I switched from a 15" to a 19", the resolution on the samsung monitor is much much better then my old one..

I got two more questions, if you don't mind:
1) Is there a way to put the resolution higher than 1024x768 in windows and keep 16bit color? The monitor is suppose to do 1600x1200, but when I put the resolution any higher then 1024x768 it changes the colors to 256.. is there a way to correct this?

2) Do you think that getting the 64meg GeForce II GTS over the 32meg is a wise decision? from what people have been telling me, I won't noticed any difference, except for the price of course

Thanks,

Monitor color depth depends solely on your graphics card. My 1989 NEC MultySync on my PS/2 is capable of 32bit color, but the graphics card driving it on gets up to 16bit (1MB card). Do you have the V7700 installed? If so, do you have all its drivers installed? Windows may still think that you have just a generic VGA adaptor and not the V7700. Note: 16MB memory on the video card is sufficient to drive 1600x1200 at 16 bit color. Getting the 64MB GeForce was a good thing, always best to get the largest framebuffer you can, it may not make much difference now, but in a couple of months you'll look like a genius when games start to take advantage of even more complex graphics.

ohh.. it depends on the graphics card.. thats why it is not working. I just got the monitor, I don't have the computer yet, I just hooked it up to the old computer, it only has a s3 ViRGE and a 12meg Voodoo2.. it probably doesn't support it.. but the Asus card should right?

i'm actually not really sure what model the hub is, I just said that I wanted a hub that is 5-port and matches my NIC's, so they gave me a dlink 5-port hub, didn't tell me which model, I think there is only 2, and one is the "hubby"
