I want to buy interconnects for my system though I really need some advice as which brand to buy and where to get the best deal. First let me say that I don't really believe the hype that exotic or super expensive cables provide higher quality results. I don't want to offend anyone, I just need to get that out so you understand what I am looking for....With that said, I do however want to buy interconnects that meet the following standards:

1)Made of very durable and of high quality materials (not stuff that is crappy and cheap as far as quality is concerned)

2)Great price

3)Adds a nice look to the system

So while I don't buy into the hype, I don't mind buying a lower cost interconnect that does try to market hpye IF IT meets my criteria. Hopefully, you guys and gals with experience can help me out on this one....Thanks a bunch...Chris

how much is your system worth?

A good figure to spend on cables and speaker cable is about 10% of your system.

By your definition I should be spending $250 on interconnects. Um, let's see....how about NO? :)

Anyway, you can get acoustic research stuff at places like best buy I think. Their website. It's well-shielded and high quality IMO. Helluva lot cheaper than monster cable too.

I'm assuming you mean "interconnects" to be RCA cables/S-Video/Component Video cables, right?

I use Monster cable almost exclusively. There are four important things or words to look for in an interconnect:

1. Copper (as in strands of copper that make up the core...should be 100 Oxygen Free Copper (OFC))
2. Shielding (as in RF shielding. Good cables have a lot of it)
3. Jacket (rubber that covers the "cable" part of the cable...should be nice and thick, yet flexible)
4. Connectors (the plugs or jacks should be gold plated for maximum signal/current transfer)

You can find all these things in a $25 pair of Monster Cables, or you can pay $400 for the same thing, but with a fancy-schmanzee scientific name like "Cryogenically Phosfusinated Dielectrically-Insulated Peptide Free Cabling." :p

I don't work for Monster Cable nor do I own any stock. I use the stuff. I pay full retail for it. It works very well and "wears and tears" quite well. I have two sets of RCAs that connect my EQ with my Amp. I've had them for about 9 years now...they look and perform like new.

If you go to Wal-mart and buy a $4 S-Video cable, you just got a $4 S-Video cable. Got it? Good. :)

monster cable...ROFL

if you can borrow a crimper and a stripper, it'll be fairly easy to build a killer quality cable yourself, or you can just look around over at parts express

Yea I'd go with either Monster or Audioquest for interconnects for good quality and esthetics. I have a pair of Audioquest Quartz X3 Interconnects. And sure you could build your own even if ya want to do that. Save some cash that way.

Home Depot 14 guage speaker wire.

Blind tests have proven you can't tell the difference. As for other interconnects, such as Digital Coax, I don't know.

Yes, I use AR interconnects in my home theater system and I love 'em- no difference between them and comparable Monster Cable. Even better, try to find either on eBay and save a good 75%!

Thanks for the replies guys...This is great stuff. Again, I don't want to offend anyone here that believes the botique fancy wires are better then good quality made generics but I have done a lot of research. Part of the reason for my research is that I am a big time audiophile and I'll drive a beater car and live poor but my home video system will be on the higher end (see below). Naturally, after having spent my life savings for a good home audio/video system (this is by no means anything spectacular, most serious people have $15 to $25 systems) I wanted to make the right choice for wiring. I spent the last 3 or 4 months reading article after article. The results are clear, in every single blind test owners of systems from 10K to 150K, store owners of shops specializing in the sales of botique interconnects and speaker wire, editors of audiophile magazines, etc could not tell the difference from a $16 cable and a $2000 cabel.....

To quote a senior member of AVS forum and owner of a $25K system:

"I was a believer in cable differences for many, many years. Then after reading the results of some of the double blind comparisons of cables - such as those conducted by John Dunlavy wherein multiple audiophile magazine reviewers could not tell the difference between $1000+ speaker cables and #12 wire when connected to speakers that won the Stereophile Speaker of the Year award (identities of the participants were kept confidential by Dunlavy) - I decided to conduct my own comparisons.

To keep a long story short, after numerous comparisons with speakers ranging from $900/pr to over $10,000/pr, with wires ranging from #12 to $2700/pr, with listeners ranging from casual & spouses to 30-year audiophiles and high-end audio shop owners, my results mirrored those of Dunlavy. In properly conducted double blind comparisons, wherein the listeners were reduced to only using their ears (and not their eyes) to tell speaker cables apart, not a single person could do it.

Nearly every participant was a believer in cable differences and quite adamant about it. Nearly every one perceived differences both before and after the double blind comparisons - and this includes me. However not a single person could "prove it." I was absolutely convinced I was going to pass, before one particular comparison I thought the differences were vast. But as soon as I didn't know which cable was which, I could no longer perceive any difference at all. It was a fascinating & educational experience.

The same results happened in the interconnect comparisons between Radio Shack Gold and a host of expensive interconnects. Much to the chagrin of the participants.

My advice to anyone who might ever participate in a well-designed test: Don't bet on your ability to pass!!!"

With that said there are many good ideas. I would make my own cables but I just have the time to do it right now, though that is a great idea for peeps that do. The Accoustic Research sounds great. I might cosider the Monster and Audioquest if I can get a killer price though I'd only buy their standard model and like I said it has to be killer price. I do like the looks of the Monster and Audioquest. I'll try Ebay no matter what I decide on, I didn't realize this but you guys are right...ton of cables on Ebay and maybe I can save some $......Thanks....Chris

10% figure would include allcables (interconnect and speaker cables). The system should only include DVD/CD player, amp/pre-amp or receiver, and speakers; it does not include TV. $2500 is pretty decent amount for just DVD player, amp, and speakers. If you have 5.1 channel setup, plenty of speaker wires there. My system is only about $1400 (onkyo DVD, onkyo receiver (DTS), and 5 NHT SuperOnes speakers, and Paradigm PDR10 sub) and I spent $120 on cabling (pretty close to 10%).

It also depends on what kind of source you are listening. For movies, it doesn't matter much. But if you are into live classical/jazz recording, you can try experimenting with more expensive cables (most fine AV stores (CC or BB are not AV stores) may let you borrow some items for you to try at home). BTW, AV can be an expensive hobby just like having PC--upgrading it with kick-ass video card, modding it, overclocking, and what not.

if i were you i would get a mains filter (for the analogue circuitry as far as I know and the surge protection), like at here www.russandrews.com

and some cheapish cables for 25usd a piece. also keep it digital for as long as possible. since jitter is far less important than analog distortion per interconnect.

take a look at mine: www.marlbrook7.freeserve.co.uk

or for toslink in n america@
http://www.sys-concept.com/toslink_patchcord.htm

if you want a top grade digital coax then look no further than the max rochlin memorial cable@
http://www.enjoythemusic.com/etmcable.htm

btw java has frozen on me for some reason, lol.
