Okay, now that I've decided that my video card is not dying like I previously thought (long story, another thread). I want to go ahead with a monitor upgrade from my aging Hitachi SuperScan Supreme 19". I have a Sapphire 9700 pro video card and I'd like to connect it to a LCD monitor and enjoy the benefits of getting hit with less radiation and having more space on the desk. These are the two that I have in mind:
1. Dell 1900FP - from Dell of course.
2. Hitachi CML 174 - From Monitors Direct.
I'm more partial to the Hitachi because of the specs and the reviews but.......... Will I have a problem adjusting from a 19" CRT to a 17" LCD?
If you would like to confuse me further by suggesting other monitors, please do. I'm a newbie with LCD's (except on my 8200 laptop). This is for my home rig so it's primary function is gaming, internet and some photo work.
Thanks.

17" 1280x1024 LCD is bad, when you play games at 4:3 (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768) resolution, it's scaled out of original aspect ratio.

I don't have any experience with the Hitachi, however I do own one of the 1900FPs. Another suggestion is the Planar 191M, which is a great LCD. I had both at one time and decided to keep the 1900FP, you can find my review and a thread about both

In this thread

Post back in that thread after reading if you have any more specific questions and I will try to answer.

P.S.... LCD's rock! You won't regret your purchase. :)

Remember that all 17, 18 and 19 inch LCD monitors have the same 1280 x 1024 native resolution thus they will all scale when using them at (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768) resolution. The key specification for gaming is pixel response time, faster (lower number) is better.

Good point, since this levels the playing field, I guess response time does become the critical component... the Hitachi sure looks tempting. Does anyone have this monitor and care to offer feedback on it?

Well, I started to feel the "USE THE SEARCH OPTION" police getting close to me so I did just that. Nothing really negative about the Hitachi, so I think I might go with it.

Also, the scaling really isn't an issue when playing games. The scaling is noticable when working in your OS, but the scaling in games is different and doesn't effect the image quality.

The Hitachi TFT rules.
I have one. they have a 16ms responce time. Available in two colours, has DVI & DSUB.
I dont notice any trailing/ghosting (and i have very sensitive eyes), in DVDs or games, like UT2003, BC, RalliSport Challenge, ext;
As for the screen size, i went from a 21" CRT to a 17" TFT, and i dont notice that mutch.
I can now use my desk, as a desk thanks to this Hitachi TFT

Speaking of the Hitachi I understand it uses the exact same screen as the BenQ FP767.

Anyone else read this or compare the two? As the BenQ is alot lower in price and has one heck of a exchange policy.

They pay shipping both ways and have a replacement within 48 hours for the first year of a three year warranty.

new Planar PX171M has a response time of 16ms, for those looking for a 17". I think the Dell 19" mentioned here has a 40ms response time. Basically the Planar should kick butt.

The Dell 1900FP has a 25ms response time.

For what it's worth, I'm evaluating a BenQ FP767 as I type. The colours are excellent - very very vibrant, much more so than most of the other LCD's I've seen (and I've seen quite a few). The response times are excellent, the contrast ratio is really good as is the brightness. I am not crazy about the way the monitor looks physically but for this nice of a screen, that's oky. I find the yellows a tad "weak", but e very thing else is excellent. The sharpness is good - not the sharpest LCD I've ever seen but still quite good.
