please give me the facts about when the new millenium is...

I was discussing this with a roomate but I realised I didn't have any facts... all I had was heresay and whatifs.

Did the calendar start on year 0 or 1?

I don't really care that much about but when discussing it I would like to have some valid points to bring up instead of speculation.

This is the way i think of it... when a human being is born, do they start at year 1? i dont think so, they start at 0, and go up to one... I feel it is the sameway with the whole millenium ordeal

some monk came up with this whole idea in the year 535(or roundabout there ). he decided that the year in which Jesus Christ was born should be the first year, year 1. thus, tomorrow night should be his 2000 birthday!
except that the monk was off by two years so none of it matters anyways.

does 2001 mean 2001 years have passed or does it mean 2000 years have passed and we are working on the 2001st?

think of it this way

-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15

if there is a 10 there must be a 0, so the millenium started 2000.

Then you can do it like this

from -1 to 0 was one year
from 0 to 1 was one year
so 0 was not a year

that means the millenium is going to start 2001


so, we have a good logic of both sides, so lets just think of it this way

from 2000 to 2001 is the millenium change, at the start of 2000 the old millenium ends and the millenium year starts, at the start of 2001 the millenium year ends and the new millenium begins.

and jebus was not born on dec 25....so everyone stop saying we celebrate xmas on the 25 b/c he was born that day.....it was a pagan gift giving day that i believe a roman leader decided to put the date so he could get some attention out of it.....

Read the links that guyver01 posted. It is basic mathematics (according to our calender) that the 21st century begins at 12AM 1-1-2001.

actually lowfatbaconboy is right. Dec. 25 was a pagan holiday of nature. that's where stuff like christmas trees came from. and actually at the time that they used this holiday, it was believed that Jesus was born in mid january. Now I believe they're saying it was probably April or so. the reason that they used the pagan holiday's date was because they were trying to convert them and this gave pagans a certain familiarity in this new religion.

and the years cwent from 1 b.c. to 1 a.d. there was never a year zero. or at least the monk who dated the calendar did not incorporate one. so as for the original question, the new millenium starts on monday. (they even stated this on Seinfeld)

When people started celebrating the new millennium when 1999 ended, I couldn't keep myself from roflmao'ing. Even a complete moron should have realized that you start to count with 1 and not 0...

At least, that's my view...
