Please explain how to back up DVDs

Hello, think I've run into an issue here. I tried to back up a DVD, it did copy all-right, but the movie didn't have the menu in place!

To start with, I have this:
_NEC ND-3500AG DVD-RW drive
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum with Windows XP update and the latest 5.3.5.10v drive update
Using cheaper no-name 4X DVD-R media, works all-right

Changing the software is not an option right now. I copied the DVD files to the hard drive first, and then transferred all of them using the "Create data DVD" option of the program.

Is this problem related to the bit-setting thing? I don't really know what it is. How to properly back up an unencrypted video DVD?

Just use DVD Shrink.

I have it. How to get it to work? Let's see...

"DVD Shrink will also burn your backup DVD, if you have installed the latest version of Nero."

Nah, no good for me.

I'd just like to know if it's possible with my current software which satisfies all my needs save for DVD copying.

i think you can use dvddecrypter with shrink for backing up movies, as decrypter has a burn feature, but you will need to look into the specifics

i don't backup my media this way, i compress mine with divx, but...

I dont' think you can just copy the dvd files to the hard drive. it doesn't work that way. i think you can use a free program called dvd decryptor to create an iso image which you can then burn to dvd with your software. I think the suggestion of dvd shrink is appropriate as it will do the same thing.

I did, it worked without any decription, really.

Maybe I should formulate the question like this:

If I have a set of DVD files on my harddrive and not in an ISO image, and want to burn them, do I need to care for bit-setting? Will a stand-alone player recognize such a disc or I should get a bit-setting enabled software first since the Creator 5 doesn't have such an option?

Thanks, but looks like I don't really need to. It's just that particular DVD had issues. Just tried to back up another one - burned without a problem using both Data DVD Creator and Disc Copier. Looks like it automatically closes discs to DVD since there was no problem playing it back on a standalone rather old JVC player.

However, I've run into another major issue with my drive here. Would like to discuss in another topic.
