Can someone explain what makes Clevo laptops even better than other types of laptops, like ASUS or HP Envy (just to throw a couple of names out there). When looking at laptops, I assume specs are just specs, if they are comparable, then it comes down to price. Do certain companies, like Clevo, somehow make better laptops despite the specs being the same as say an ASUS or HP laptop?

Define "better."

Clevo is "different."

I currently own two Clevo notebooks.

One is the M980NU and it is a beast, with 18.4" 1080p screen, supports 3x HDD/SSD and has two GTX 280M in SLI powered by a mobile quad core CPU. It is big, heavy, runs hot and is glossier than just about anything else. It also feels just like a desktop when you're using it, which is probably the intended result.

The other is an M860-something. It is almost normal looking with 15.4" screen and only supporting single HDD. However, most of the major exterior pieces are brushed aluminum, and the LCD screen is a whopping 1920x1200.

I think really the most compelling thing about the Clevo units is that they were intended from the start to be custom built. Most notebooks are purchased as a particular model with a particular configuration. Even configurable notebooks like what you can do at Dell's web site will limit you on what you can get. Many places selling Clevos allow an N'th degree of customization.

Also, most Clevo units are high end in their class (but also cost "high end" too).

The other thing is that you probably won't see someone sporting a Clevo at a coffee house or LAN party, so there's some semblance of exclusivity. Probably not intentional, but seems to me that their volume is lower than the typical retail notebooks.

If you want something cheap, or something with great value at the price point, then a Clevo is not for you. If you want higher end and customized, then Clevo is great, and even price competitive with other higher end units.

If you're shopping for Alienware, you should be cross-shopping Clevo units. Otherwise, you're probably better off with a Sony, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Macbook Pro, etc.
