I haven't kept up with the pace of technology and I'm still using PC133 SDRAM. I wanna switch over to an XPC for silent/small operation. Apparently I need PC2100 DDR but PC2700DDR is about the same price. Is this stuff just like PC100/133 when it came out and the "speed rating" isn't important as long as it will run as fast as my FSB? Do they need to be installed in pairs?

You can use PC-2700 backwards compatible. Only need pairs if using a dual channel chipset like intel's 865PE or Nvidia nforce. Although with the nforce chipset not that much difference. You can still run dual channel chipsets like those single channel.

so basically get whatever is cheapest and will run at the minimum PC2100 and singles are ok?

This will be going into a SK41G system.
