A friend of mine wants to build a computer and do some moderate overclocking (FSB to 150MHz, etc.). He wanted it for under $1500 and to be reliable--even when overclocked. Here's what I chose:

Case: Antec SX840 (includes 400w PSU and fans)--cost: $80
Mainboard: Asus A7N266-E--cost: $200
CPU: AMD Athlon MP 1600 OEM--cost: $180
HSF (heatsink/fan): Vantec FCE 6030D--cost: $18
Thermal Grease (for attaching HSF to CPU): Arctic Silver II--cost: $6
Memory: 2x256mb Mushkin DDR 300MHz PC2400 SDRAM DIMMs (note: you should overclock your front side bus to 150 MHz to do this)--cost: $170
North Bridge cooler: Thermaltake Crystal Orb--cost: $10
Graphics: Gainward Cardexpert GeForce 3 Ti450--cost: $165
Hard Disk: 40GB IBM Deskstar 60GXP drive--cost: $95
IEEE 1394: Lucent 1394 Firewire--cost: $40
Modem: 3Com USRobotic v.90 56k modem model 2977--cost: $50
CD-RW: Lite-On 16x10x40x--cost: $70
DVD: Pioneer 12x--cost: $30
Floppy: Generic crap--cost: $8
Monitor: Sceptre D77D--cost: $200
Keyboard: Steal one--cost: Free
Mouse: You have one--cost: Free

Total Estimated Cost: $1322. I found this cheaper at pricewatch and pricegrabber, but I bumped up all the prices to be more realistic.

why the mp processor? this isnt a dual processor board.
personally, i'd spring for a new optical mouse
i might go a little better on the monitor too.
the keyboard, mouse and monitor are what you see and use all of the time. i usually go good on them.
and 2 x 40GB ibm 60gxp are less than $200 at newegg.com definitely bump that.

anyway, my 0.02. should be a nice rig

why are you buy an Athlon MP, why not get the Palomino desktop (im just tired of seeing the x* thing) .. actaully thats what you should do, no reason to get the MP at all .. save a good bit with that .. well just my thoughts ..

He has an optical mouse, and he plans to steal a keyboard from school. Thanks for the price support on the 60GXP.

I heard the MP processor is factory unlocked, and he doesn't want to risk destroying his CPU. Personally I use the XP. Would you mind elaborating on the Palomino desktop?

The palomino desktop is the athlon xp....You are right I heard all the mps come with L1 bridges closed so no xp trick of filling in canyons and then bridge the breaks with a defogger kit...

PersonallyI think the raid is a waste..the performance isn't really there...Is he going to be using this as a server??? IMO...

I like pretty much all the other choices...should be nice....

I've had a fetish for raid ever since I had RAID level 0+1 on my old Apple Macintosh Quadra.

get the .. er.. XP , hands down .. no need wasting money .. for raid, if he really wants it (and was willing to spend uneeded cash on the MP) get a real raid controller, if just raid0 with 2 disks, get the 3ware 6200 or if you want stripping with mirroring get the 6400 .. can be bought at
http://www.hypermicro.com

and reviews can be found at

good luck ..

I do believe I'll remove the second hard disk and RAID.

I would recommend the New maxtor DX hard drive. ATA 133 fr when they start to support it and can be had for around $100 also. I like mine.
Also, go with the Alpha Pal 8045 HS and a nice 80mm Fan ( I have the YS tech 48.5cfm). Pretty much top of the line cooling right there and the comobo can be had for $40 or so shipped.

That's a waste of money. It only offers .01 c/w performance better than the Vantec FCE 6030D and costs $20 or $30 more. As for the Maxtor, IDE drives currently do not make even full use of ATA100, so ATA133 is pointless. Finally, the Deskstar 60GXP is currently faster.
