I've been out of the computer game for a wicked long time. I've had a laptop forever and I finally realized it just sits on my desk all the time anyway, so I might as well get the better price/performance of a Desktop. Everything's off NewEgg.

Case: Extremely basic mid-tower ATX case. Got three fans for it.

PSU: Sparkle 400W. Made sure the 12V Rail was at least 18 Amps, which it appears this is. Assuming that's enough wattage.

GPU: PNY NVidia 8800GTS. I want this thing to be a viable PC that'll play the latest games (If obviously not at max settings) for a long time. 3 years of viability in this system would be good, 4 better. I figured DirectX 10 was mandatory.

CPU: Intel E6400 C2D. Picked this one because it's apparently an extremely good OCing subject. Keeping the stock HS but I got some Artic Silver 5 for it.

Motherboard: BioStar TForce965PT LGA775. It was recommended as a good mix of price/performance for OCing my choice of CPU.

RAM: G-Skill DDR2 800 RAM. 2 Gigs in 2 1 Gig sticks. I didn't splurge for super fancy stuff because with a stock Intel Heatsink, I doubt I'm gonna be pushing much past 3.2 GHZ anyway, which this RAM should be able to keep up with. I think.

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar 250 GB SATA 3.0 GB/s. Picked up a SATA II Cable because it's an OEM. That should be all I need, right?

Media: OEM Samsung DVD burner. Even though it's OEM, it should come with Nero or Roxio to allow burning, right?

OS: Vista Home Premium.

Monitor: Where I'm most clueless. I used the same 19 inch CRT monitor for approximately 95 years. I grabbed a Sceptre X20WC 20.1" Widescreen LCD Monitor with DVI. It's retail so it should have the proper cables. There are some pretty crazy esoteric stats here. 300 cd/m2 Brightness, 800:1 Contrast Ratio, 5 ms response time. The Pixel Pitch is .25MM. I'm assuming this is a basic, decent monitor?

And that's it. I am starting with nothing except a keyboard mouse and printer, and a joystick for playing Freespace 2. Did I miss anything? Is tab A going to fit into slot B? I guess my main concerns are compatibility issues. I'm aware that even if everything fits this won't OC much because I didn't grab top of the line stuff and I'm sticking with the stock Heatsink. The case should come with the proper screws to put in the motherboard, drives, and that kind of thing, right?

Any insight or suggestions is really welcome, and I appreciate ya'll taking the time to look over the 9 millionth iteration of this thread.

That's a great price on that, I second that recommendation, great PSU. Good idea to go a little higher than 400W.

And your case should come with all necessary hardware.

Also, I think BFG offers a lifetime warranty on its cards, I think PNY is a only few years, not 100% sure. I might just swap it for this card.

You could go with an E6300 and save money there. Or get the E4300 and even lower RAM and still get the same OC :)

Well after poking around some more I've changed up a few things.

Changed the PSU to the Rosewill 550W

Changed the Processor to the E6300, since the GSkill DDR2 800 RAM probably isn't going to OC high enough to max out the E6400 OCing abilities anyway. The E4300 DEFINITELY seems to need memory that's more expensive than the DDR2 800 RAM, and the processor itself doesn't seem that much less expensive currently (Plus, if I was going to OC the heck out of that thing, I doubt the stock HS would be able to match what the E6300 can do with a stock HS) These are all guesses by me, like I said, it's been a long time since I've done this.

Still looking for the proper motherboard for this combo, though. The problem is, I can't seem to find much of anything offering SLI. I figured maybe someday a year or two from now when the 8800GTS has gotten a bit older and a lot cheaper, I could throw another one in there and SLI them together to keep the thing running games for a bit longer.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an SLI capable Motherboard that'll be good for OCing a C2D E6300 with that RAM? If there ARE no SLI solutions for whatever reason, anyone got a good suggestion for a regular one?

Thanks for all the info!

My budget is 1550 bucks shipped. Really really really can't go over that.

It needs to have Vista Premium and be as good a game system as possible while having an admitededly low budget. I'm comfortable OCing. I'd like it to be a viable, "good" computer for a minimum of three years. I'd LIKE it to be SLI capable because I feel that might future-proof it a bit more, assuming the NVidia chipsets can OC the processor roughly as well as the Intel P695 can.

Thank you for taking pity on me.

If I had $1500 to build a new computer, this is what mine would look like.

The Parts:

E6400

BUFFALO Firestix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

Asus P5N-E SLI

BFG Tech GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit

Enhance ENP-5150GH 500W ATX12V

Tuniq Tower 120 P4 & K8 CPU Cooler

Antec P180 One (Silver)

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200KS 320GB

DVD Burner

Notes:

CPU: As you know, most average an overclock of around 3.5GHz on safe voltages... is the extra cache REALLY worth the extra money that separates it from the E6600? I don't think so.

RAM: Micron D9/Promos... capable of DDR2 1100+

CPU Cooling: The best sLGA775 air cooling in existence.

PSU: The fabled Enhance 500W...

The Grand Total:

$1365.95 before tax/rebates.

You could even upgrade to an E6600/8800GTX if you wanted...

Stay away from the rosewill psu. go with the enhance or corsair. tcg has a nice build, but I think its missing a monitor. So...

$120 - Microsoft Windows Vista 32-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD - OEM
$200 - Sceptre X20WG-Naga Black 20.1" 5ms DVI Widescreen 16.2M colors ($240 - $40MIR)
$189 - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz
$140 - Asus P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI
$185 - G.Skill 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-800 F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ
$365 - Foxconn FV-N88SMBD2-ODOC GeForce 8800GTS 640MB ($405 - $40MIR)
$80 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250620AS 250GB 7200RPM SATA300 16MB Cache

$31 - Lite-On 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA SH-16A7S-05

$1402 + tax and shipping (after rebates)

If you dont get charged tax (~$118), go for the 320gb hdd (+$10), the E6400 (+$33), the enhance 500w (+$18), and the tuniq tower (+$55).

Mine comes out to $1365.95, which leaves room for a monitor...

If that still isn't enough, I would downgrade the case to the Centurion 5, and the motherboard to a Biostar TForce 965PT...

Thanks guys. The first build is nice, but also doesn't include Windows, so with a monitor that bumps it a bit higher than I can go.

The second build is also good but lacks a case and includes rebates in the shipped price, also putting it a bit out of my reach.

I'll just get the better PSU with my build and downgrade the HDD or something. Unfortunately the 1550 dollar limit is a really hard ceiling for me, and it needs to be that price shipped, without rebates factored in
