While he is a nice guy from what I hear, this is inappropriate. How is this any different from a referral link? If this is allowed, all kinds of people will be posting to sell their products or services and it will get ugly.
 
I agree. My husband has a tech company and he needs to make some money, too. 🙂 I never thought it was appropriate or allowable to post about it on Anandtech forums. Don't tell me I've been wrong all these years and could have brought him business. :Q

Whatever helps him sleep at night.

If he's making a profit, he's soliciting services. I don't care how small it is. It opens the doors to all sorts of dealers that only make $5-$10 on items they get wholesale that they can masquerade as a deal for ATOTers.
