Currently I?m running a Win2K AD, native mode with one DC?4 servers total, Exchange 2000 and about 30 users. I am upgrading to 03 R2 and would appreciate ideas, advice and tips/tricks to my upgrade plan. I?ve found a lot of useful info but could always use ?real-world? advice.
I?d start by installing Exchange 03 on another server and bringing it into my current organization. Transfer mailboxes over to 03 and then bring down the Exchange 2000 server?.once everything is replicated, of course. By doing it this way I am trying to avoid the ?mangled attributes? issue that running adprep /forestprep from 03 server can cause to a 2000 AD domain. I do have the InetOrgPerson workaround to this so worst-case I can fall back on that.
The rest would be pretty straight-forward. I?d keep my current DC online, bring up a 03 server, do the adprep stuff and dcpromo it. Make sure everything replicates and do an in-place upgrade of my current DC to 03. That will give me 2 DC?s and can then push everything to 03 only forest.
I will have full backups and server images put to tape prior to start. All servers have latest SP?s and patches.
So what do you think?
Also, I?ve read where, though not necessary, if you can upgrade to 03 first then go to 03 R2 it would be a good idea. What are your thoughts? Are the two that different or is that just a waste of time?
