1. PC will be used for HTPC. Music/HD video output. Computer will act as a NAS as other machines on my network will access content directly though this PC.

2. Budget is $1250ish, parts listed with price from Newegg.

3. Buying in USA from Newegg only (using my priority card 0% APR offer)

4. No brand preferences but I selected Intel C2D because I know it'll preform and overclock decently on stock voltage if I ever wanted to overclock. Also, lower priced off brands (Geil, G.Skill, etc) I prefer not to use if something slightly more "name brand" is $10 or so more.

5. I will likely only use my DTS encoding card (Auzentech Xplosion I think....)

6. Yes.

7. Default for now, don't need overclocking help though. I know how.

8. 720p/1080p

9. Plan to order parts next week when I get paid (paying half instantly, 0% APR on the rest)

Parts I have picked out:

Case: nMediaPC 1000B -- $99 (pretty decent case)
CPU: C2D E7500 -- $119
Mobo: Gigabyte nForce 9400 (forget model number, it's OOS at Newegg but was in stock yesterday) -- $120ish
RAM: Corsair 2x2GB (4GB) DDR2-800 standard 1.8v RAM -- $54.99
Optical: LG Blu-Ray Burner -- $199
PSU: Corsair 400w "Core i7 Compliant" 80+ Cert -- $54 (44 AMIR)
HDD: 2x Seagate 1.5TB 7200.11 SATA $239

I'll be using my Auzentech card for DTS encoding duties, it's PCI.

What do you guys think about all that? I know some of it is overkill but I think it's fairly reasonable. BTW: I need all 3TB because my current old make-shift HTPC is using about 1.4TB.

I think you're pretty well set.

The only comment I have is on your hard drives. Seagate's 1TB+ drives have been riddled with problems, so that may not be the best choice. (actually, all the 1TB manufacturers have had probs, but seagate waaaaaaaay more than anybody else).

WD Green 1.5 TB are about $115 each. Or you can get the Green 1TB which are about $85 each. Looks like that case has 4 drive bays so you should be OK with more drives at lower capacity.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I imagine the Green WD's will use lower power anyhow.

I'm assuming the "Gigabyte nForce 9400" has onboard video. Nvidia's chipsets have been able to handle varying levels of HD since the 7 series like the 7050 so with a good codec he should be OK there. He can always decode with just CPU and can overclock if needed.
