NHL Hitz 2002 for GameCube
PREVIEW

Midway is not well known for producing your standard sports game, but more for hard hitting, smack talking, in-your-face, fast paced kind of games. NHL Hitz 2002 is no exception. This game is going to be what NBA Jam was for basketball and what NFL Blitz was for football. A little extra spin on the coolest game on earth, hockey. If you can remember back to the N64?s early years, Midway came out with three-on-three fast paced, high goal scoring action in Wayne Gretzky?s 3D Hockey. While its intentions and potential were in the right spot, the initiation was off and the game was pretty much a dud.

NHL Hitz 2002 will make up for what Wayne Gretkzy?s 3D Hockey left off. Hitz, carrying a full NHL license (allowing you to play with all players and teams in the NHL), detailed facial expressions on the players faces, an almost lively crowd that will even throw objects at a player, many secret players and stadiums you can play at, along with many other goodies. And no Midway game is truly a ?Midway? sports game without the ?On-Fire? mode where if a player has been performing at an exceptional rate he will be on fire and have an advantage over his opponents.

The graphics are shaping up nicely, judging from the videos and screenshots I?ve seen, player detail has gone to a new extent, the wear and tear on the ice, the extreme detail in minor things that are going on (such as a players helmet flying off, etc.). The gameplay seems to model it?s predecessor, Wayne Gretzky?s 3D Hockey very much and that it will be 3 on 3 action, no rules / penalties, and perhaps the feature we?ve all been waiting for, a new fighting mode. Not much is known about this fighting mode, all I can say is that I hope it?s somewhat based of a fighting games engine so that you can at least move around while your fighting, rather than just alternate between the two trigger buttons to alternate punches from both hands.

Overall, if you like Midway?s intense style of sports games, this is a must have. Even if you aren?t a hockey fan, you?ll be hooked. This game will throw out all the stuff at once, I myself am wanting to see the 3D crowd rather than the 2D smiling stick figures that the majority of sports games have in them. If the fighting mode is anything what it is rumored to be, you might as well get the game for the exquisite fights. NBA Jam and NFL Blitz are already hits in their sports, hopefully Midway can work their magic and make NHL Hitz 2002 the standard for ?extreme? hockey games.
