please comment on my first computer

this is the first time i'm building a computer (finally got EMS to ship me my case) so please leave any suggestions to the following parts:

processor: athlon 1700+ retail
mobo: SOLTEK SL-75DRV5 OR KT3 Ultra2
memory: crucial 256mb DDR2100
videocard: MSI GeForce3 Ti-500 OR ATI 8500LE 64mb

already bought:
harddrive: 80gig maxtor 7200rpm
case: antec sx830 (now if EMS don't screw me...)

i am going to stick with my old 8X4X32 CDRW until a DEAL comes along for DVD etc

basically all i'm doing is watching movies, play some games (CS etc), and browsing and that's all

i can't decide on the mobo but so far i'm leaning towards the KT3 ultra for mobo and the gforce3 for video

i'm using retail CPU since i don't plan to mess with OCing and buying a 1600+ and a nice heatsink would cost almost the same 🙁

***btw is the company COMPUTER GEEK reliable? i am reading MIXED reviews in resellerratings.com and people say that the gforce they got is a PNY... i have had enough of bad merchants from EMS 🙁

Sounds nice do0d. Especially for playing CS. That system will make the Quake 2 engine scream. I would use either and Asus, Abit, or MSI board though. (I'm not knockn' yours...just what I prefer.) Also why not spring for the 1800+ or 1900+. The price difference isn't much, and you'll want the extra 66mhz before long anyway. Also I would def. get 512MB of DDR. I dunno what OS your using, but 256 isn't what it used to be. Depending on the video card you could get a geForce 4 4200 for about the price you can get that MSI. That geForce 3 is nice, but benchmarks show that the 4 outperforms it. I would spring for the extra $30 on the card, and $50 on the ram, and 6 months from now you'll be happier, and not wanting to upgrade once again. Just my opinion. One more thing I would get the 1900+ processor just because it's not much more. I dunno what kinda budget your on, but well pc supply stores would love me for trying to get you to spend more dough....lol

dont buy the ti500. you can get the ti200 for like $30 cheaper and overclock it if you wanted more speed. I know you said that you dont want to mess with overclocking but I wasnt sure if you meant for just the CPU. If you dont mind spending a little bit of extra money I would go for the G4 4200 64MB. I have no experience with the ATI Radeon 8500LE but have heard very good things about it. Everything else looks good, especially for CS. Looks like you may have excess power for just CS. But I guess you can never have too much.

CurtCold--- i'm squezzing every penny... literally 😀 ... so i'll wait for the memory to get cheap then get more

PuppettMaster001---they are selling the Ti500 $8 more than the Ti200 so i'm really deciding either to spend $89 for the 8500LE or $98 for the Ti500...

thanks for the suggestions 😀

I would def look at stepping up to 512mb ram, I'm running 512mb PC2100 DDR with WIN XP, it runs fine but I have managed to bog it down at times. I am def. looking too buy more for mine.

Great value in your choices. You could spend more, but would only get marginal benefits I think.
