Note to mods: could I have this thread as an upper thread stickey for the next couple of days? Thanks.
Greetings to all you friends and music lovers.
As you may have already heard, tragedy has struck Radio Free Records, Durham's only alternative/non-mainstream record store (Especially now considering that School Kids on 9th street has left ). Last week, the entire inventory of Radio Free Records was stolen, along with the cash register and the money it contained. Needless to say, this is a devastating blow for such a small local merchant, as well as for those of us who depended on RFR for buying and selling good music.
The local music scene and its supporters are coming together to help RFR recoup its losses with two benefit shows:
Where:
The Basement (under Bully's)
1102 Broad Street
Durham, NC
How much:
$10 cover
When:
Friday June 14th, 7pm start
Who plays Friday night:
Little Miss Messy
The Sames
The Weather
Dragstrip Syndicate
Ameliorate
When:
Saturday June 15th, 7pm start
Who plays Saturday night:
Malt Swagger
Holy Roman Empire
Des Ark
Choose to know tomorrow
Transportation
Rosa Begosa
It's a steep cover, but it's for a good cause and includes a full night of music. All proceeds from the door and half of the bar will be donated to Radio Free Records, as well as moneys raised from auctioned items from local merchants. I have included below a snippet of an email thread that has been floating around concerning the details of the theft:
> burglars got most of the cd stock behind the counter and left the cases
> behind (radio free doesn't put the actual cd discs out in the bins,
> just
> the cases). they got all the records, took the stereo, and absconded
> with the cash register which had a few hundred dollars in it.
>
> radio free, one of the best record stores to ever grace this state, is
> virtually wiped out. there is no insurance.
>
> so, one, whoever took this stuff i would think would have a very hard
> time unloading it for cash. i mean, what's the market for lots of 20th
> century composer cds without cases? keep you eyes peeled for suspicious
> sales and put the word out to your pals across the country in places
> where such items might have some demand.
Come out if you can afford to help out! And you'll get to meet me in the flesh Friday night (okay. That is definitely so not worth the cover, but maybe I can be persuaded to buy ya a beer.)
