The original plan:
Upgrade RAM on old skool pentum2 machine. Thanks to all of you bustards here on 2pcu.com I?m getting a whole new rig 😡 I was thinking about glomming the New ASUS, but since this is only my second erection(build) I will be going with the Tyan Tiger MP. (Easer to get answers for my questions) I know the MPX Version is coming out very soon. But unfortunately I really don?t have the time to wait for it. The computer will be used for video editing, some gamming, and heaps of pornographic materials of course.
Please let me know if there is anything else I should get or change on this setup.

ANTEC SX1040B Black (Original 400W) (can?t change this, I have it already)
TYAN Tiger MP (S2460) (Polish3)
2-AMD XP 1900
2-ALPHA PAL8045U, SK6 or something even better? (I think I will go water later on but would like to go with fans to start off)
1024MB Crucial Registered ECC (2 sticks)
ATI ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 8500DV
MATROX RT2500
PLEXTOR 24x10x40 or YAMAHA 24X10X40?
Lite-On 16x DVD Model LTD-16301 Black
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum
Teac 1.44MB Black Floppy Drive

Cables:
1-Round Floppy drive cable. 18-Inch.
2- ROUND, 24-Inch, True ATA100 (dumb question do I need more then 2 cables?)

Other:
Logitech''s Z560 4.1
Arctic Silver II
1 extremely Empty wallet (oh well, I have been saving up my welfare checks for months, Thanks for paying for this guys!)

Here are some easy questions?

1) Do I need to get AMD MPs or will the XPs work for 100% sure?
2) Are AMD MPs basically the same as the XPs: ?performance wise? (but the MP are tested for SMP setup?)
3) I keep hearing weird things about the Crucial not working well with the Tiger?
4) Anyone like the Kensington Optical Elite PS/2?
5) I will be using Win2K, should I upgrade to XP later on?
6) Anything else you would change/suggest or something I forgot

Thanks everyone, I greatly appreciate all the help! I can?t wait to get this thing purring!

MPs and XPs are the same thing but I think one is spec for SMP though I think I heard some people have successes with their dual XP setup.

Crucial should be a good brand to use. I wouldn't see why it won't work.

Haven't used that Optical Elite. I have a Logitech Cordless mouseman optical alongside the Cordless freedom keyboard combo. I like it so far.

Depends if you are into gaming more. XP is just like 2000 and will take advantage of your hardware (get professional and not the home edition). But 2000 is proven so you can go for 2000 first since you can't go back from XP to 2000 without a reformat.

Oh and one more thing...

WHERE DID YOU GET THAT KIND OF MONEY TO THINK ABOUT BUILDING THAT KIND OF A SYSTEM???? The specs are what I like! 😀

<< 1) Do I need to get AMD MPs or will the XPs work for 100% sure? >>

XP's will not work 100% for sure. There is a pretty good chance, but no guarantee.

<< 2) Are AMD MPs basically the same as the XPs: ?performance wise? (but the MP are tested for SMP setup?) >>

Exactly.

<< 3) I keep hearing weird things about the Crucial not working well with the Tiger? >>

I have never heard anything of the sort. However, I believe if you goto Crucial's website (www.crucial.com) you can see if your motherboard is listed as one that is definitely compatible.

<< 4) Anyone like the Kensington Optical Elite PS/2? >>

I like the MS Intellimouse Explorer. The revised versions that are out now are even better than before.

<< 5) I will be using Win2K, should I upgrade to XP later on? >>

I don't see any reason to do that. Of course, as time goes on, XP will get support that 2000 won't. I suppose eventually you should make the change, but I personally won't be doing anything of the sort.

<< 6) Anything else you would change/suggest or something I forgot >>

Order the memory from Crucial directly. This way you can take advantage of the 15% discount that Anadtech Forums users receieve. I would choose the Yamaha writer over the Plextor writer. Yamaha has a few more innovative technologies behind their drives. Also, make sure that the Alpha heatsinks (Or whatever heatsink you choose) will fit properly on that motherboard. Damn nice system you are going to build. =)

<< XP is just like 2000 and will take advantage of your hardware (get professional and not the home edition). >>

Heh... I was about to bash this until I realized that we're talking about an SMP system here. Since Imaginer didn't say it explicitly, note that XP Home doesn't support SMP.

1) Do I need to get AMD MPs or will the XPs work for 100% sure?

I have 2 of the XP1600's in mine. They work fine for me, but I have the first version of the board. I heard it suggested that the newer revisions are putting the kibosh to XP's. No guarantees that XP's will work. Try at your own risk. My XP's show up as MP's in my system.

3) I keep hearing weird things about the Crucial not working well with the Tiger?

IMO those are based on inexperienced builders using non-registered ram. It was suggested that Crucial may have had some mislabeled ram sent out at one point also. There are many users like myself not having any issue. I have 4 x 256MB DDR RD Crucial in mine.

5) I will be using Win2K, should I upgrade to XP later on?

Either one. XP Pro works nicely also.

PLEXTOR 24x10x40 or YAMAHA 24X10X40?

Plextor or rebadged. Lite-On one looks good too. Yamaha has crappy DAE the last time I checked. My Plextor works very nice.

I have some cheap Thermaltake Volcano II heatsinks on mine and they work fine for stock speeds. Just make sure the ones you go with will fit. The clearance is tight on one side of each CPU socket.

All you are missing is a SCSI adapter and as many drives as you can afford.

Enjoy

Hey rmblam,

How will I know if my XPs aren?t working correctly? Will the system even boot up? Or will i get a message in post, bios, or something?

Thanks

"2-ALPHA PAL8045U, SK6 or something even better? (I think I will go water later on but would like to go with fans to start off)"

Due to the extremely limited OC'ing abilities of the Tyan, anything more than a $20 heatsink is just throwing money away.

You might want to avoid the Audigy, I had some unfixable problems trying to get that card to work properly in my SMP system. Only system I couldn't get it to run properly in.

"They work fine for me, but I have the first version of the board. I heard it suggested that the newer revisions are putting the kibosh to XP's."

There's no truth to that rumour, I have not heard of a single person not getting XP's to work in a Tiger that had anything to do with the board. I had a first revision board that worked with XP's, sort of, the board up and died out of the blue for no apparent reason, don't know what happened. I got it replaced with the most recent 1.03 revision and have had no XP related problems.

"IMO those are based on inexperienced builders using non-registered ram."

I don't believe this to be true either. I'm certainly not new to building systems. I initially experienced no problems with the Crucial RAM I had. Then suddenly I started getting all sorts of memory errors. Then one of my 256MB sticks started detecting as 80MB. That has nothing to do with inexperience. I called Crucial to inquire about what the problem could be and the Crucial tech support person I talked to said that he had experienced "minor" problems and lockups with the memory in Tiger boards. He went on to say that the way to fix a crashed system properly was to clear the CMOS and reboot the system. That does not sound like a minor problem to me, and I'm sure this guy wasn't an inexperienced builder. While I was waiting for my replacement Crucial memory, I picked up some Corsair and had none of the problems that the Crucial memory was causing me. I have not had any problems with the replacement Crucial DIMMS so far, so the problem is not inherent in all Crucial RAM, but I have ssen enough people complain to make you wonder. I read someone else who was told by Crucial that they knew of the problem and that he just got a refund because they wouldn't replace his RAM. Take note as well, that Crucial memory is not listed on Tyan's recommended list for the Tiger (updated 1/2/02), which would seem rather peculiar considering what a major memory supplier Crucial is, and how obscure some of the brands on the page are.

"How will I know if my XPs aren?t working correctly? Will the system even boot up? Or will i get a message in post, bios, or something?"

If they don't work the system will probably just not post at all.

<< Plextor or rebadged. Lite-On one looks good too. Yamaha has crappy DAE the last time I checked. My Plextor works very nice. >>

This is not true at all. In fact, the Plextor drive is the only drive I have seen perform better than the Yamaha drive in this test. Of course, the difference is minimal and you will never be able to tell. Check out this review of 11 different CDRWs. It includes both the Plextor and Yamaha 24x drives.

Corsair and Crucial are both a division of micron. I was reading that they use the same ram? People even say they that have the same serial numbers and everything. I don?t know from experience. Have you ever heard about this?
After I got done reading this I was really surprised. About 15-30 people said that had no problems with the Crucial in the Tiger:

Read this about the RAM

Maybe you just got a bad batch? And both brands now work great., if you have anymore information on this please let me know.

Also, What specific problems did you have with your Radeon 8500 card on the SMP Tiger?

Ps. where did you glom your Corsair Ram?

Thanks

opps..sound blaster Audigy card

I'm running two XP 1600's on a Tyan Tiger MP using Crucial RAM w/o any problems whatsoever. I'm using it as a server and it's one of the most stable setups I've ever had.

The Alpha 8045 won't work on this board as it does not have the four mounting holes.
