For a few weeks, I can´t access some of the sites I normally visit everyday.Chris from AMDZONE said it has to do with DSP problems my ISP may have. They couldn´t help me with it however.Chris gave me the IP address of his site (194.25.2.129) with which I can access his site. AMDZONE.com doesn´t work no longer for me.As I understand it,my computer still tries to ping the site with the old ip, which is no longer valid. So can anyone give me the Anandtech ip so that I can finally acces the site again? And does anyone know what this is about, or what I can do about it? Cause I really don´t understand all this...oh, and the HARDOCP ip as well please, it´s the same with it...

Thanks in advance for your help! (I know this is off-topic, sorry!)

I would try hardcoding your DNS entries if theyr'e not already.

"DNS entries" are the IP settings in TCP/IP properties that point the computer to a Domain Name Server (DNS). Basically a DNS server takes the address you type in your browser (http://www.anandtech.com/), looks it up, & returns an IP address for your computer to request data from (216.151.100.101). Without those numbers, your computer won't be able to access sites by their domain name & will only be able to browse by IP (which sounds like your problem).

Your ISP should provide you with a primary and secondary DNS address to enter in TCP/IP.

Thank you very much for clearing things up...I´ve been trying to find a solution for my problem for weeks...and the tech support of my ISP didn´t have a clue...

Hope I´ll be back in the game soon....

Find a different ISP, dude... If they don't know that, they've got their head up their ass.

Good luck.

I use Ameritech in Ohio, USA, for ADSL service under a 1-year non-cancellable contract @ $40/month and no installation or HW fees. For the first couple of months it was fine - almost instantaneous downloads @ 900 kbps. Then I started having problems not being able to log on or not being able to reach certain sites at certain times, etc. Ameritech said they were from time to time having problems with their servers in Ohio.

I found that "hard coding" the IP was not that good a solution, although I cannot remember what the complications were. I finally got fed up and called their tech support after not getting e-mail for several weeks. After 3 hours on the phone (during which time things went from bad to terrible to good finally) I at last was set up with a new Ameritech DNS server in Michigan. So far (one week) things have been fine.

If your problem is like mine then you need to have your ISP help you set up your system to connect to another DNS server, like Ameritech did for me. Or get a different ISP, as was suggested.

-----------------------

BTW, to obtain a URL's IP try this, in Windows:

1. Start > Run > command > OK

2. That should get you to a DOS prompt - in any event, get to a DOS prompt.

3. At the DOS prompt type ping, then a space, then the URL, then hit enter.

4. Like this:

ping www.anandtech.com

5. The screen will show you the IP for www.anandtech.com

Also note that IP's sometimes change, as did AnandTech's a few weeks ago when they changed servers. URL' seldom do, however. This is another reason to get another ISP - putting in the IP's manually is a nuissance.

Ooops, I just saw I mistook DSP for DNS...that just shows how great my knowledge is on this subject...anyway, I got my ISP´s DNS address, and tried to cofigure my TCP/IP settings with it...that didn´t work though, I don´t know what I did wrong, but that doesn´t matter anymore, cause the problem is solved now. Thanks to Viper´s explanation, I remembered that Modem Wizard, a utility I´m using to optimize my Modem, has a feature called Fast Ip which retrieves the ip addresses for all my IE bookmarks to speed up the connection to those frequently visited sites. And it worked out! Everything´s back now (Anandtech,Hardocp,3dChipset, Amdzone etc.). About time too! Thanks again! Can you explain this?

Thanks Ulysses, but the method you suggested would give me (for whatever reason) the OLD ip which isn´t valid anymore.Don´t know what this is all about, can it be the ISP not updating their DNS servers? (sounds stupid to me...)
