Please build me a computer for about $900

will use nforce and would like it to include good everything and speakers but no monitor

thanks it is my deal with my dad that if he buys a computer for christmas then if my grades are good then i can build a computer for about 900 to try

that was you got private mail.
BTW, $900 should buy you a very good computer, espcially without the monitor!

This isn't *too* terribly terribly hard..

The slightly quirky and fast as hell puter
AMD AthlonXP 1600+ ~120$
Shuttle AK31 Revision3 ~85$
Crucial 256MB DDR PC2100 ~35$
Geforce3 Ti200* ~200$
Case (Er.. somebody help me out here! Something in the 80$ range..)
Seagate Baracuda ATAIV 40gig ~110$ or 80 gig is something like 180$ if you need the storage
DVD drive is probably the pioneer 16X slotload.. ~60$
Speakers.. hmm.. Monsoon IM-700's baby! ~140$..
PAL 8045 with Orwhateveritis fan that's decently quiet. 50$
Audigy OEM ~50$
Missing anything?

Intel computer, stable, like a rock, but possibly disapointing preformance..

Asus P4T-E ~150$
2X Rambus 128MB ~100$
P4 1.6GHZ ~150$
Stock heatsink and fan..
Audigy OEM ~50$
Case Any decent 60$ case, P4s are less picky about venthilation..
Geforce3 Ti200* ~200$
Seagate Baracuda ATAIV 40 gig 110$ (To save money, P4 platform is way too expensive..)
Slotload DVD Pioneer 16X 60$
...Wish I could say Monsoon IM-700 but that would put us overbudget.. sure you can't go up to 1000$?

Note:*The Geforce3 Ti200 can be interchanged for a Radeon 8500 OEM..

Please.. the NForce isn't all *THAT*.. the Kt266A beats it in most apps.. and it's integrated video is pathetic.. the extra bandwidth hardly helps the CPU at all.. the sound aint all that either, up with Audigy levels.

Please consider these two offerings..
(Excuse the P4 offering if you're an Intel hater..)

xp1800 $210
alpha8045 and arctic silver 45
radeon8500 retail(!) 270
case enlight 7237 340W 60
oups....sunon 80mm fan 5
modem 18
maxtor dx740 40gig 95 (as far as i remember)
crucial ram 256mb 35
-----------

738
nforce MSI 185

total 923

for an *top notch elite* system w/ best gfx-card around, best mobo and XP1800+

You can of course get always cheaper components, save money on the gfx-card....and of course i didn't add components like dvd-drive/cd-rom/floppy.......actually the above components resemble what i ordered....for a 'bare bones' high end system...to get it running....and i add components like dvd-drive, cdrw etc. later. Some components (cd rom, floppy) i re-use from an older PC here...and note that i do not need a soundcard (eg. audigy) since i use the nforce onboard sound.
In case that the radeon s*cks and i have to return/resell it i still have another gf2mx on board (just to be on the safe side)...and i'd recommend another stick of ram for the nforce board, too.

greetings

the only thing i would change in the above suggestions would be the speakers and the motherboard. i think the kk266a would be a better bet for now, until all of the kinks have been worked out of the nforce chipset (id wait until at least the second revision). for speakers, i would go for the new Logitech Z560's. i hear the bass on this sytem kills the klipsch set. and get the radeon. darn near ti500 performance and (so i hear) much better picture quality).

900 dollars huh? well, take a look at my sig. theres your 900 dollars w/o the speakers. should be able to build a great comp for 900. good luck...

Good idea FishTankX, but if nourdmrolNMT1 wants an nForce, he has no need for GeF3 level graphics. nForce has integrated GeF2MX graphics (which is good enough for 95% of the population), high end sound (which is actually good enough for most hardcore enthusiats), integrated NIC, and other brand new technological features (like HyperTransport and yes, even overclocking features, read hardocp's latest review of the MSI K7N266 PRO nForce board

Please.. the NForce isn't all *THAT*.. the Kt266A beats it in most apps.. and it's integrated video is pathetic.. the extra bandwidth hardly helps the CPU at all.. the sound aint all that either, up with Audigy levels.

nForce is faster, and it will only get better once ASUS, Abit, Gigabyte etc. start releasing boards into the retail channel (although there's doubts about Abit, but ASUS and Gigabyte will do 🙂).
